Source for CCI # 34 Primers?

Heh, I was just going to ask the same thing...thanks! I haven't had any issues using CCI200s, but all of my .308 is going into my m14 now, so no reason to not use the 34s.

ever see a " standard " factory round just hand cycled through a ag42 ? ........

the deep dimple into the primer that is created is more than enough reason to go with a #34 primer .

it just takes one to let go to make for a bad day .
 
I've done some informal experiments with my M1, M14 and ARs with primed cases and different primers including the #34s & 41s. Didn't see any discernible differences so those 34s & 41s just sit on the shelf....
 
With everything I have read on very reputable sites, it's all due to the hardness of the primer which they deem necessary to prevent "possible" slam fire, a pure safety issue and not a performance issue. Because most semi autos have floating firing pins, when the action slams shut, they do leave a good dent in the primer ( all my semi autos do )which is very close to slam fire conditions.With all my semi autos, I use either the military primer if I can find them or I use the Winchester Magnum which is the next hardest primer cup. Some people have no issues using a standard primer and thats fine if they want to, but I will stay with my routine as it eliminates one issue that I don't have to worry about. Each to their own !

The AG42 does have a pretty forceful action, it's true, but he's not loading for an AG42, he says right in his post that all his rounds are destined for his M14. The US DoD didn't even have a hardness spec for primers when the M14 was developed.
 
I used to use them when I experienced a couple of 'doubles' with my AR. Thought it might be the primers being too soft, but turned out the brass I was using needed to be run through a small base die to work in that particular chamber (Noveske). Once I sorted that out, I've been using regular CCI primers in my AR/M14S/Garand for a while now and never had a problem. Be aware that the #34 and #41 are a magnum primer, so adjust your load accordingly. I initially didn't, and had some primers pop on a max load of Varget behind a 77g SMK. All was good when I went to the regular CCI primers. YMMV.
 
BTW, there are two different grades of CCI small rifle primers (non-mil-spec). If you're loading for an AR15 pattern rifle pick the CCI-450 over the CCI-400.

The 450 is designed for higher pressures and has thicker cups.
