Hello Everyone,

I as wondering if anybody has information that they could share with respect to deer hunting in south eastern Manitoba...specifically in the Sprague, MB area around the Reid (sp?!!!? - Reed, Read) River?

How is access? Is there crown land sufficient to warrant the 2 hour drive from Winnipeg to check it out? Are there deer populations out that way worth checking out?

As you can see, I am a total noob when it comes to Manitoba geography and hunting areas and am just trying to get a feel for things if anyone has information.

Deer numbers are down, too many big ass timber wolves near Vita,and tons of yotes, but have seen a few around Sundown, But hard to get permission unless your related. My friend got his doe earlier this week and then shot the 4 yotes that where hot on her tail. It might be worth the trip to check it out but its late in the season for scouting and getting permission, you should ckeck out the rm office for maps, and try google earth to give you a better idea of the surrounding area.

Again, doesn't seem to be much moving this year, but Sandilands Prov. Forest is a biiiiiiig chunk of Crown land to hunt on. Get a map, head out on #1 hwy.
 
The number of deer in the area where I hunt was been pretty good, which is about a mile west of the the east edge of the Sandilands Prov forest. After bringing our deer to the butcher last weekend (we took a 4x4 and a 5x7) we drove by the farm and so three deer in the pasture about 100 yds from my stand. I guess I am lucky that I have a good place to hunt.

I did the Sandilands thing last season...toured a pretty good chunk of it over 5 or 6 FULL dawn till dusk days...and didn't see a whole lot in the way of deer.

Maybe I'm spoiled coming from the veritable "Serengetti" for hunting in Alberta east of Jasper, north of Hinton...where one would have many days of seeing 40, 50...even 60 deer when out for a full day!

I saw a TON of hunters and blaze orange - literally everywhere - but only 6 or 7 deer the whole season. Call me picky, but the only one I considered shooting was a BIG bodied buck on private land (hence no pull of the trigger) near Sandilands...and even he had a tiny rack.

That said, this year I won't be being so picky...any deer on crown land that I happen to see is going to be fair game for the freezer!
 
for sure and do your best to get access to private land. after hunting private land, i don't think i could do crown, and the sandilands is a veritible war zone come november
 
I've heard around Whiteshell is decent, but Whiteshell itself is closed to hunting.

We saw a lot of deer yesterday around Buffalo Point/Sprague. Plenty of deer, including one very nice buck at first light, but in a private field so no go. The buck was trailing a number of does...head down...doing what he does this time of year. He had a significant limp and it looked to me as though he'd already been clipped this season...just not fatal. It would have been nice to put him out of his misery...nice rack too!

We wound up dropping two anterless yesterday...a decent sized doe and a young buck (this year's fawn). Should load the freezer with jerky!
