Southern Alberta 3Gun League

Just printed off the rules from the web site, 38 pages is the number of current pages of rules.

Hi Garand, the most current rule book includes the Club Series Rules, the Regional Rules as well as Special Club Series Rules i.e .22 cal Divisions and is 25 pages printed on a normal 8.5x 11 printer (most current Club Rules distributed to official clubs via the 3GN's President's office.) Maybe you got an UBER rule set :) A lot of the official rules explain the Division classifications etc (we helped entrants figure out which Divisions they could enter into) but as far as the rules most people pick them up quickly. We start the match with a quick, distilled easy to understand version and do a walkthrough on each stage after reading the briefing highlighting any rule related issues we feel people might not understand or that is different than they might be used to. It looks daunting when you first grab hold of the rulebook but it's really not and the benefit to safety, consistency and ability to get the CFO to approve the match significantly increases with a standardized rulebook. I personally like the idea I can look at my results on a stage I just shot and compare it with people in 10 different countries around the world who shot the exact same course following the same rules. This might not matter to some but for others it's a big deal, and I have to say it adds credibility to the acceptance that this is a legitimate sport sanctioned and supported internationally. Don’t get me wrong, ‘outlaw’ matches are fun and have their place but if you want to set up a large scale sport association you need this level of standardization. We have worked with Sport Canada on how sports should be organized and defined and if we want the action shooting sports to be taken seriously we need to work on areas like this as well as coach training, certification and development etc.

ok, in general terms what are the match fee's for a 3gn event, how much goes to the promotor and how much goes to the club.

EDITED TO ADD: is your fee a flat price or a percentage ? or a flat price up to so many shooters, then percentage after....

ability to get the CFO to approve the match

why does the cfo have to approve the match..... our matches are shot according to our range template allowances, the only time we have asked the cfo's permission is when we wanted to use a shotgun bay for pistol and they gave us a "special events" waiver after reviewing templating.

Exactly as you say Tinkerbell, CFO approvals are required when a course of fire exceeds a range's standard template of allowances. All ranges and their templates are different. These could be things such as: which caliber tables are approved, what direction of fire is allowed, what types of targets may be used, where and how, what movement if any is allowed on a particular range, are there conditions such as adjacent range closures, etc. required. With standardized stages you can't just 'tweek' the course of fire or array setup or distances to suit existing range approvals, you have to fit the course as it is into what is available and then get special approvals for everything that falls outside the established approved template. This can be very simple or it can become very complicated. Very few ranges anymore have blanket approvals for use and the liability of a range exceeding its authorized use is too high. Your range may be different but in most cases the above is true.

I'm sorry I'd really like to answer more questions about our services but out of respect for CGN rules I can't comment on our company or business as it isn't fair for those that pay to advertise here. We have requested information on becoming a business member but until that process is complete I can't comment.

Common rules would be a bonus in the province for starting clubs but I don't think an outside organisation should dictate rule sets. I prefer Outlaw 3 gun events and dislike what 3 Gun Nation has turned into.

This sounds like a great way to legitimize our interests to the larger public. Increasing our profile, encouraging equipment purchases and presenting a positive sporting opportunity seems like a good thing for all of us.

I'm sorry I missed this match on Halloween. If I find out about the next match in time, I'll register for sure.

It never ceases to amaze me how someone can build an entire website for a shooting club and fail to include the location of said range.

I haven't read the entire thread so someone may have already answered, but the Chinook Country Shooter's Club doesn't technically have a range. We are based out of the Lethbridge Fish and Game Association range in the Summer and the Taber Indoor range in the winter for our IPSC League nights. However that's merely because the majority of our membership is from that area. Because CCSC doesn't have a dedicated home range CCSC could put on a sanctioned 3GN match at any range in Western Canada willing to or wanting to hold one.

Read through the 3 Gun Nation rules and have a few questions;

Rule 1.4.1 as I read safety chamber flags must be used. Is your club using them?

Rule 1.5.1.2 Safety Condition Two "Completely Empty" there is a set of Series and Regional completely empty conditions. Which do you use or is it dependant on the match?

Rules 8.1 to 8.5 for targets, paper targets must be 3 Gun Nation targets and rules 8.1, 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5 do not permit clay pigeons or bowling pins to be used as pistol, shotgun buckshot or slug, or rifle targets. is this correct?

I think using 3 Gun Nation rules might be a hard sell in Medicine Hat is 3 Gun Nation targets have to be used and also due to the number of variations in penalties used. 3 Gun Nation rules allow 2.5 sec, 5 sec, 7.5 sec, 10 sec, 12.5 sec and 20 sec penalties as well as match DQ.

1.4.1 It was my understanding that it was optional. I'll have to peruse the rule again as I've only read them a few times and even after years of shooting IPSC I still find new things in the rule book.

1.5.1.2 We followed the Club series rule book. Either gun is completely empty no ammo in the firearm at all when grounded, or gun is grounded with ammo in the gun and safety it ON

Rule 8.1 8.5 correct, only sanctioned targets are permitted.

Cam, if you'd like scott's contact info message me and I can give you his E-mail. He knows more about it than I do. I just shot the match, he's the head hauncho who put everything together and did all the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

Oldways, ground line, what is your cost per shooter?

While I can't answer for Scott I can tell you the match fee for the opener was $40. Could that amount change up or down for any given match? very likely. EVERYTHING is new right now. EVERYTHING has to be figured out at some point. Over the past few years I've found that Scott has a knack for organisation.

Here's how I (speaking for me, Nick, no one else) envision things:

Right now there are LOTS of members of IPSCAB. Over a dozen IPSCAB sanctioned matches are held every year.

There are still clubs like BTSA, MHRRC, and others I don't know that hold fun club matches.

In the future I see 6+ 3GN sanctioned matches in AB per year.

There will still be clubs like BTSA, MHRRC, and others that hold their own fun Club matches.

Basically those that want to go out and shoot have more options. I really don't see how that's a bad thing? Lots of guys (like Dallas has already said) prefer "Outlaw" club matches. The existence of an organised body doesn't mean those matches can't still exist.

I notice that Heavy Division wasn't recognized. Why was that? Will it be recognized in the future?

First Post! - Welcome 'Born Under a Bad Sign' Absolutely we will be running Heavy Division in the future, for this match some HD calibers exceeded the current range allowance template on one range and it would have taken longer than we safely had to get it added. We are working with Chinook Country Shooters over the winter to get everything in place to offer a full season of 3 Gun Nation fun in 2016 including all Divisions and the Club Series only special .22 cal Divs. . If there is enough interest CCSC may even run one more this year (although I can't promise HD would be included until the Spring matches.)
