Southern Ontario Coyote Tips?

So spent the last couple days setting up a bait pile of frozen goose/lamb/chicken guts, and what not. It is in a field about 125 meters from a small bush which I have a tree stand set up in about 25 meters in.
I have spent a few hours in the last couple days sitting in the stand using a rabbit decoy, and dying rabbit caller out in the fiels about 10m from the bait pile.

So far haven't seen anything, not eben tracks from them overnight.

Today was especially cold, and windy and we had a fresh snow fall of about a foot last night.

Any tips or techniques?

Time of day?

I'm a noob at this so anything will help.

I would try calling the earliest you can in the morning (paying attention to legal shooting time) and late in the evening before dark. You may catch them feeding on the pile if you head in early enough. I also reccomend tossing bigger pieces of food on that pile. If 5 coyotes find that they will make short work of it and most likely be gone in a couple hours.

I have seen 2 deer devoured in 1 night. Not sure how many hit it but all that was left come the morning was hide scraps and bones with a crow cleaning up the rest.

Youve got the right idea ml... Ive shot them in the morning off bait piles.. but best of all is evening cause they wake from their beds hungry and jelouse(territorial instinct) and will visit frequently just to see whats going on in their social circle.:D

Call with a rabbit distress, fawn distress in the evenings, when the bait has stopped being supplied, they have a good memory, and you can use it to kill them, even weeks after the bait has stopped.:D

Ps; Its prolly good to mention that the bait pile should be near a large swampy thick bush they like to bed in.
 
Keep an eye on the bait from the road with bino's near dark....don't hunt it until it is being hit. Once it is being hit you might not want to use your calls at all for the first few sits. Just like deer hunting...make sure you have undercover entrance and exit routes. You may be best off sniping them from a good distance, 200yards plus. If stand hunting doesn't produce, you might do well getting a handful of guys together and push the bush, have all exit routes blocked...they should stay in the area once they lock onto the bait.

I also use gut piles to bring in the yotes...except I dont put them out frozen...I thaw them out before I put them in the field. I have used frozen before, but I find that something that has sat at room temp for a while brings them in better. I use a howler call to get their attention, then the smell does the rest.
 
anytime i have hunted over bait, it has been put outside to ripen a bit than placed in the field. also when hunting over bait you only need to howl, i found that if they know the food is there, they usually won't respond to a distress call.
 
Down here on bait sites to keep them around the boys take white 5 gallon buckets drill two holes in the top lip and feed a piece of air craft cable through the side and bolt it to a piece of old cow or pig hide which they put in the bucket, then fill with water and allow it to freeze as a solid block.
They secure the cable's other end to a tree. The coyotes will tear the bucket apart trying to get all of the hde out but it will last for weeks.

that's what i was thinking. why bother hunting over a bait pile if the yotes arent even eating from it? your time would be better spent looking for sign in other areas.

there are many hunters in southern ontario targeting yotes now putting pressure on them. when it comes to calling, think outside the box when choosing your distress calls to sound different than other hunters.

a rabbit in distress is the last call id be using around here...
 
the best way to hunt them, down here in southern ont is with dogs . we drive around the blocks early in the am looking for a fresh track when we find a fresh one we put the dogs on it and wait on the other side of the block for then to come out . this is the most sucsesfull way to hunt them in southern ont DUTCH

Oh there are coyotes! Howling at dusk, and plenty of tracks around, just not specifically at the bait pile.

I have been sick since thursday, and have not been out since. Hopefully I will get out tomorrow or Wednesday, and find some activity.

We will see. I'll update for sure.

Redfrog has given you the best advice. If you see no sign, don't hunt there.

I suggest you get a good mouth blown call, travel around until you find some tracks and fresh sign, then start calling in that area. You are wasting your time waiting over baits that are not going to work.

edit: I just read the last post. The key, however, is to hunt where they are.
 
Howling works very good at this time of year. They are breeding and are territorial.

Coyote vocals will likely motivate then more than a distress call will.

I seldom use distress this time of year at all.
I know they still have to eat, but given the choice of a burger or getting laid....well you get the idea.
 
i go to my local butcher shop and ask for "trimmings" that leftovers. any local butcher should help you cause they just throw them out anyway. i get a white plastic bucket put the trimming in the bucket, put a lid on it and let it set somewhere warm. that is then my next weeks bait pile. it reaks, just nasty stuff.

i set up the night before put out my pile and do some calls. i come back at the crack of dawn and set up on my pile. ive reduced my local yote population pretty good, but i still have 6 from this pack to get.

You could dazzle them with your giant post count, just like you do the ladies I bet. Get off the computer and hunt.
The coyotes are there, its not rocket science if they are in the area.

LOL well that was a pretty dumb question:p

I gotta laugh when people bash others with a high post count...post 10 things or so a day, take 10-20mins on CGN...it adds up quickly. I am sure they waste more time doing stupider things.
