Looks like I'm going to be moving back to Ontario within the next year. I was wondering how the hunting is? Moving back to the Barrie area. Also going to have to find a range.
I was in Ontario for three years before I moved back to NB, the whole time I was there I never went hunting or even to a range not gonna let that happen again.
I know I seen a pile of turkeys around while I was there just wondering what else there is?
Will I have to take a hunter Ed course for Ontario?
Thanks
Dan

Within 20 minutes west, north and south from barrie there is decent hunting....turkey, deer, coyote, partridge(other small game birds) geese etc. handful of ranges as well.

As for taking the hunter Ed course you'd be best served to contact an instructor directly. I do believe that if you have held a hunting license anywhere outside of ontario you can challenge the test without taking the full course. Not 100% on this.

is the area near Barrie crown land to hunt on?

"...Within 20 minutes..." And East. One hour or so North puts you in Moose country. Mind you, you can't just stop beside the highway and go into the bush. Nearly all land anywhere near Barrie is owned by somebody. A lot of 'em are TO residents. There is the Simcoe County Forrest, but you have to belong to the Ontario Federation of Angler's and Hunters. Mostly anglers and very politically motivated. Any Crown Land will be infested with skiers, hikers, bird watchers, picnickers and other riff-raff. Hunting on most of it is impossible.
"...have to take a hunter Ed course..." Not if you can prove you've done one elsewhere. You'll have to pay the Outdoors Card tax too. It's all on the Ontario MNR web site.
Look into the Barrie Rod And Gun club. I think that's the name. Don't know exactly where it is. Haven't been that way for eons. Another option is the CFB Borden Rod and Gun. There are some very big deer running around Borden.

As sunray mentioned there are simcoe county forests in and around barrie. You do have to be an ofah member which is an easy application and small yearly fee. Despite the high activity level in many of these forest tracts by other civilians I know a ton of people who tag out each turkey and deer season in said simcoe forests. Private property is certainly the most desirable place to hunt if you have permission. : )

Due diligence. Several tracts are high traffic areas but I have found just as many to be ghost towns! I spent 50 hours in the bush this spring in several tracts close by. In that time I saw only two other people. Scouting your spots early will help u decide which spots are good to go. ' )

Found a place to hunt coyotes and didn't see another soul all winter....a particular tract in Baxter(there are several)

googleup wolfsden . 10 minutes from barrie. lots of info from these folks, hunter/turkey courses etc.
Simcoe county has notices in most local papers warning users of Simcoe county forests of ongoing hunting seasons.
