Hey all,

I purchased a Soviet Type 45 SKS not too long ago and would like to have it Cerakoted. I can find shops that will Cerakote it for me in Canada but I have been unable to locate images of Cerakoted SKSs and thus have a hard time choosing what type of result I want. One-tone flat black might be boring, two-tone Digi-urban might be too "modern" for a firearm dating from the '40s, I draw a blank. This would be my first Cerakoting so I'm a complete noob hence my asking here.

Any better ideas?

If your SKS was manufactured in the 40's, don't do anything to it. If it's a later manufacture from the mid 50's, do whatever you want. Tacticool it with an Archangel stock/digital camo if that's what floats your boat.

Highly unlikely his was, I think he's just referring to the model number for the rifle - SKS45. But, what Ar180shooter said is about right - if it was made in 1949 or 1950 I'd leave it, but if you really want to destroy your rifle, fill your boots.

The design is 40s but the rifle is likely 50s manufactured.

Do you want just the barrel and receiver painted, or the mag and gas tube too?

Most likely, but you can never be too careful. Even if it's a '49 refurb, you still don't want to mess with it.

I understand the '49, but anything else, c'mon. Is it cause they're so rare?

No, it's because they'll be rare in 30 years because everyone bubba'd them instead of keeping them as they were issued and preserving the history. Look at the Enfield's. Post a 'WTB Enfield' add and you'll get five messed with ones for every original one offered.

People are allowed to do whatever they want with their property, I'm allowed to not like it and tell them such.

To be honest i have no clue what year it was made. I assumed it dated back to the forties but as you suggest, it could very well be from the fifties also. Usually not a "tacticool" type of guy but in this case, it might save hours of rust fighting maintenance. My main goal is to make said SKS more durable.

Oh it's definately a refurb, it has at least two different serials stamped, one of the two numbers is quoted as being the "official" s/n since it appears on the documents but i feel the seller could have chosen the second number just as well.

All this discussion really revolves around the date at which the firearm was built, is there a way to find out accurately with a definitive answer? Online resource?

Lemme me know,

What does it say on the receiver cover?

Do what you like to your rifle - forget what others say about it. I'm going to Cerakote my K31 soon because I want it a certain way that I like - and I'm sure there will be grumpy nay sayers.

The blued steel is already resists corrosion, that's why bluing is done.

If you plan to keep it for life, go for it. If you plan to sell it one day you'll probably just decrease the value.

Curious, would you guys consider refinishing the stock to be a 'bubba' move? Mines beat to hell and back, but the metal on mine is pretty much pristine.

Sorry for the thread jack
