I finally did it. Tula 1950, Arsenal refurb. Was not too much cosmo, but some rust was present. I removed it with brush and gunzilla, but there is some pitting. It's hidden under the stock. Some rust spots where on the piston body.

I am not sure if it's safe to shoot? ;)



Took me freaking 2 hours to clean it, remove the rust and clean the barrel. Here is the result.

Great purchase I just bought one of these this weekend at P n D was nice to hold a piece of history in my hand beside myself, lol.
Bought a tapco kit and made it 21 century yet they are nice guns . Have fun !!!!!
 
Too bad about the piting. Looks severe. Not sure if it's safe to shoot or not. Never saw an Sks with piting like that before. Too bad it looks amazing otherwise. They're a fun rifle. I tac'd mine out then took all that off and went back original. They're best that way!
I noticed my local Canadian Tire has the laminate stock Russians on sale for $174.99. That's a helluva deal!! It's been really hard to NOT pick one up :)
 
Don't shoot this, replace the gas tube and inspect the rest of the rifle. Shoot corrosive ammo or not, your gas tube will wear and possibly rupture. I had this happen with mine, were it ate through and was cracked, but yours is in really bad shape. When buying these beauties in person its really worth tearing them down for a quick once over.

Like others have said,I've never seen an SKS with pitting so bad.
Rest of the rifle looks sweet,love the different wood on these rifles,great affordable rifles that the entire family can enjoy,I have one in an ATI stock that my oldest learned with when she was 8.
I have 3 so far myself,they are addictive!

I would agree ; I have four SKSs , and none of them had pitting . As others have stated , i would get it checked out before firing as the pitting looks severe in the photos......
 
Wow , I wouldn't accept that rifle. That pitting is horrible, they need to replace that rifle and pay for shipping.
 
Yup send 'er back. Like you said hardly any cosmoline. This is what happens. Better to deal with lots of cosmoline than get a pitted rifle. That is a prime example for those who might complain about too much cosmoline or it being a hassle to deal with. That just illustrates what will happen or much worse without it. Cosmo are on these for a reason.

Yup. Cosmoline is like Buckley's, for guns - awful stuff, but it does exactly what it's supposed to do!
 
I'm not 100% sure where the pitting in the first picture is from, is it on the gas piston itself or or the barrel? I can't recommend to shoot it or not based on that pic.

For the second pic showing the pitting on the gas tube, it is all on the low pressure side of the gas tube, some people drill holes there to reduce how far the ejected shells are thrown, and some people have a slight hole in that area from factory machining. Like others have said, definitely get in touch with marstar and see what they will do, and i would get a spare gas tube just in case, but i would shoot the rifle if it were only the gas tube pitting.

A great number russians sks w as rusted. and they grinded the rust and paint it or blued over. My option is chinese is better, brand new,no worry for rust parts.
 
Its a shame you spent that time cleaning but I too would return it , get a replacement .

Could you show us how the mag is pinned? I noticed the exterior of the mag is untouched.
