I have noticed that the Soviet 1942 Tok I have seems thinner around the grip and seems lighter. I don't have a sensative enough scale so I can only go by feeling.
The Chinese Tokarev certainly seems beefier in all aspects. I have three of the Norinco's and I have shot one exclusively. It has five thousand rounds plus through it and the only problem so far has been that the original bushing cracked and the slide retaining clip split (both replaced by Marstar- God bless them). Just so impressed with these pistols.
Has anyone noticed the same?

Your Norinco's in 9mm or 7.62? I've got a 201 but I see a type 54 in my future now that I've located some surplus ammo. I'm pretty fond of the 9mm, I'd like to trythe 7.62 next.

Soviet 1942 is a TT-33. The Norchinko is a copy of the TT-54 - actually a copy of the one the Chinese arsenal produced under their communist state license. They probably made some mods to the frame around the grip area and such. They are basically the same design, except Russia made some very minor changes in the post 1954 models - the slide serrations being the most obvious. Same with the minor differences between the original TT-30 and TT-33 etc.

It could also be that the original soviet 1941-1945 were war-time production that were rearsenaled much later. Function gave way to fit and finish so most of the war-time production ones were rough.
