Just bought a sporterized bubba 93 Spanish Mauser carbine, top of receiver ring reads Oveido 1899. Bore is decent, numbers match on bolt and receiver, wood is cut down and a mess - but price was a steal ($100 tax in). Are these spanish mausers decent to fire with modern Rem or Win factory ammunition? Is there any truth to the weak/ inferior steel concerns? I was just going to use it as a bush beater unless I happened upon a stock to restore it. Any thoughts?

Keep the pressure down and make sure you check the headspace before you shoot it. These old rifles have seen a lot of rounds and some of them will have developed headspace problems over the years.

Other than that, I had good success with 170 grain bullets in an old Oviedo '93 Spanish Mauser that I had years ago. Some loads (140 grain bullets) didn't fair so well, resulting in keyholes. Stay close to the original loads and you should be OK.

Any of the modern factory 7x57 ammo loaded in North America has a pressure limit of 45000 psi by SAAMI specs. Most is loaded slightly under that. This was standardised in deferrence to the sub 98 actions and so the modern ammo is quite suitable for your rifle. This is not true of import ammo. In most other areas of the world, they put the onus on the firearms owner to KNOW what their rifle will stand and offer loading in both higher and lower pressures. bearhunter

I've got one too, also butchered by bubba.

Sweet little gun. too bad I can't hit anything with it. Minute of garbage can lid at 25 yards!

Functions okay but inaccurate as hell with every type of commercial ammo and handloads I tried.

7mm

I'll get the headspace checked and try some shots with it. Worst case scenario maybe I'll throw a 250 savage barrel at it if it isn't a shooter. Thanks all for your input.
