Good morn folks. Been away for a bit. I have a question which may have been asked before and if so I apologize for not finding it. I have purchased an FR-8 in reasonable condition but has been modified slightly. Since it has already been changed I am considering mounting a scope using XS Systems Clifton/Scout mount. Unfortunately to put that on I think I will have to remove the front sight and if I do I want to put it back on. Does anyone have any idea if this can be accomplished without causing damage.
I like having the iron sights on and free for use. I had fired one before and loved its seemingly utilitarian design and found it farely accurate out to 300 yds.(might shoot further but my eyes are only good for 300) :).
Any thoughts or opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a FR7 in the past but cant remember if the front sight base could be removed without permanently altering the rifle. What have been changed on the rifle? I would let it alone but its just me:) Thoses Mauser are a very interesting variant, would be shame to alterthem.

The top portion of the hand guard has been removed and the "barrelband" which secures the front portion of the hand guard and cleaning container/bayonet lug has been trimmed accordingly. Otherwise it looks stock. I do agree with you on not altering it but the "sporterizing" has begun. It would be nice to shoot a bit further with confidence as I want to try and use it for deer. Not entirely sure I can be confident on my target id and accuracy with just the iron sights.

Have you tried Numrich arms in the states for parts? Can you show us a picture? I bought some parts from them a while ago but had to send back the stock. Too bent to the left to use.

Ok, I never thought of Numerich, I will check that out. It would be better as it was made. Thanks for the other info as well. I will get some pictures up when I have it. Won't be until mid to late October. I am somewhat concerned about minor pitting. I have been told that a good cleaning should stop that and that refinishing the metal would be wise. Any comments on that ?

Change of thought

SO i have done some more reading and have decided to try and brimg this "ugly" beast back to stock. I am not going to attempt to put a scope on it. However I am still wondering about refinnishing ? Should I leave it as is and clean up some minor pitting or have it redone ? I think i can keep the pitting in check with a good cleaning and oiling.
I had mentioned taking it out to get a deer. I will try and improve my abilities with the iron sights. That would make it a bigger challenge anyhow.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

The peep sight on that rifle is excellent for hunting. You can dial in 100 to 400 meters, as i recall.

The front sight screws up and down, to zero it. The post is off-center, so that as you turn it you get left -right adjustment, too. A neat concept.
