I was looking at a Mauser at the Ancaster show today. I was told it was a Spanish Mauser. It was a 8 mm, not 7.62.
However, across the top of the receiver, it had an eagle stamped instead of Spanish markings. Not a small proofmark type eagle but a larger one. Serial has a EA prefix.
Anyone know if this means anything? Does it mean it is of German manufacture rather than Spanish?

"...an eagle..." Depends on the eagle and the model of Mauser. I'd be guessing it's not a military rifle, Spanish or otherwise, if there are no othr markings on it. This guy's site is fairly comprehensive. No 'EA' prefixes listed though. Add the W's.

These Mausers and others seen with no markings are very close in appearance to the Wz 29. The Pilsudski regime supplied many unmarked Polish Mausers to Franco during the civil war period.

As for the M44 designation? who knows.

I had one.

Guy gave it to me free and I passed it onto a buddy for the same price.
