Spare parts, preventive maintenance

Evening, I saw a video of a Glock rep. saying that the Gen 4 models have a new dual spring system and that this system could be changed much later in the life of the pistol, thus saving agencies money on parts.

That got me thinking. I just got a M&P 9 Pro.
- where could I get the "maintenance schedule" ?
- do "regular" owners usually get spare parts?
- do you just shoot the pistol until it fails and then deal with it?
- based on parts availability, is it better to get some now or just wait? If it takes months to get something I WILL need, might as well start now!

Background, I do not expect to do IPDA or IPSC any time soon so I will not shoot thousands of rounds through it every year. But I take care of my kit, everyone wants my cars when I change.

I started by changing recoil springs and strikers on my M&P at 5,000 rounds - there were no signs of any wear on the parts I took off, so I kept them as spares. I ran the next set 10,000 rounds, still no signs on the replaced parts. Now, I'm going to run the ones on the gun until I get an issue. Visual imspection on the current set (approaching 15,000 rounds) shows no visible issues, and I've had no failures, without going out of my way to test them, I'd say you're good for at least 15,000 rounds.
 
Spare parts are vital.

Glock stuff is easy and quick to get, same with most 1911 stuff. If you shoot HK, order from Wolverine's, get a whole bunch since it'll take about a year for it to come in.
 
Given that spares are hard to get your best bet is to keep a sharp eye on Brownells. None of the parts you might need are over $100 and they're all from an approved exporter, so when things like strikers or recoil spring assemblies become available order a couple. Before you do that though check into MP pistol dot com, a Forum with tons of info on the M&P.
 
I am of the school that doesn't fix things until they get broke. I do like to keep spares on hand. though.

Now if we were talking about aircraft, my maintenance regimen will be totally different.
 
I always have a bunch of spaer parts on hand for all of my firearms. You never know when you'll just need 'em. It's always a good idea to plan ahead...in this case, having an assortment of most major pins and springs will only help you to keep on shooting, avoiding any major down time.

Just my 2 cents...
 
Change the recoil spring every 5000rds

Other then that, dont waist your money on parts that will not break

Dude, I'm at 30,000 rounds - ZERO broken parts and 15,000+ rounds on the "consumable" parts. There are NO parts that break "most often", every part failure is an oddity. The main complaint on the Pro is that the fibre optic element comes loose. That's it.
