Sparta Kit review

Well HiCal said it would ship Monday and I figured it would arrive Wednesday and sure enough there was the tag in my mail box today. Thanks, Dave. So here are my first thoughts on the stock.
Instal Portion
The instructions are clear and there are diagrams. It isn’t that difficult to put together, and certainly won’t be to disassemble for cleaning. I noticed on my Marauder kit they don’t tell you in the instructions which allen wrenches you will need. They don’t in this kit either. Obviously you can figure it out but I like to lay everything out beforehand and it is a little annoying to have to try some out when they could just tell you. Just so you know: You will need a .125 inch allen wrench. They said you might have to do some tapping and fitting but that wasn’t an issue for me. You remove the horseshoe shaped piece at the end of the heat shield. I recommend angled needle nose pliers. Just bend them enough to get the end piece off as you have to tap them back into place to fit the new channel. I also used a plastic mallet to remove the rear sight on the Mini and to remove the heat shield.

There is a plunger that fits between the handguard and the trigger guard. You have to depress it to get the trigger assembly in the rifle. It isn’t a problem. Everything snapped in tightly.

They say that there are spacers supplied “with this stock”. I assumed the spacers were to help you fit the action in the stock depending on the calibre. They don’t. They just identify the calibre of the rifle since it is no longer visible. I panicked because I couldn’t find them anywhere and thought they forgot to put them in the kit. Just before I was about to call Dave at HiCal I remembered there was a storage space in the grip. They were there.

I was happy to see there wasn’t any issues with the MoRod I had installed. No interference at all.

Fit and Function
A couple of things and some people might say I am nitpicking but I thought they were important.

The stock is adjustable for LOP. There are some indented squares on the stock that act as stops. There is some slop there and you can push the stock back and forth somewhat. I guess that won’t matter as you pull the stock into your shoulder but it’s there.
The cheek riser is adjustable but I found it finicky. It has seven stops but when you depress the plunger to raise it, it’s difficult to get it to stop exactly where you want. I actually lifted it right out of the stock a couple of times trying to adjust it. I guess once you have found the sweet spot it won’t matter. I’m just noting it.

The completed package is definitely heavier than the factory configuration. It does seem balanced however and who knows- maybe it will make a more stable shooting platform. The aluminum top rail is strong and rigid. I decided to go with the Eotech and the Aimpoint magnifier for now. We’ll see how it works but certainly there is plenty of room for them both.

I am going out to the range tomorrow so will let you know how it performs. The Eotech is sitting over the ejection port so I hope that isn't an issue. It is looking more like a chopped M14 than a mini right now. I like that. That particular rifle is accurate so it should be fun.
Note: Some pics make the stock look grey. It is black but I had to adjust the contrast because it was just so bright outside.

The elusive spacer: It is the tab that shows the calibre.

Comparison of Mini Sparta and Chopped M14

It will fit any Ranch Rifle in .223, 7.62 x 39, or 6.8 SPC. Correction: I was told they might not fit some older model mini 14's but the rest, yes, as long as they are the Ranch Rifle version.

i had issues with my eotech and brass strikes on the optic mounted on a reciever top rail over the ejection port, may want to do something about that. i ended up changing optics to prevent this

This should only be a problem on the older mini's as they eject shells more upward then the newer ones. They are designing a new upper rail for the older models to prevent this from being an issues. Ejection port will be raised and angled slightly.

As far as the cheek weld being stiff to use I put some WD-40 on my finders and rubbed the studs and that did the trick for mine.

mine was a new target model mini with gg&g mount and brass was
clipping the bottom edge of the eotech.

I will give that a try, thanks.

Yes, I am concerned about that. Will watch for it when at the range. I am thinking of a SPARC as an alternative.

I checked my stock for this "play as well. I found my stock has 1?8 of an inch play length wise not side to side. If it was side to side I would sell it off, it is a huge pet peeve of mine which is why I dislike all the side folding stocks I have handled thus far. I got my scope mounted and range report will be tomorrow on mine.

how bad is the wobble in the buttstock? Is it tolerable? Where did you get the mo-rod from?

I don't think that that play, not really a wobble, is significant. The stock is so solid that I was surprised the play was there. I may be being too fussy. I don't believe it will affect the gun in any way.

I got the Mo Rod from his website. I got two actually. One for a Mini 30 as well. I think they make a difference. Here is his website. I have heard that shortly after I got these he stopped shipping to Canada. You will have to email him to find out: http://w ww.mo-rod.com

Nice Review!
I had the same issue on my Mini 14 Ranch with the EOtech XPS-0. The ejected brass was hitting the EOtech. What I did was I bought some thin black weather stripping and custom cut a protective strip/pad on that side and added a layer of black gorilla tape. Solved my problem and no loss of zero.

Just finished putting mine together.

Nice fit and finish good and tight lockup no real wobble. The top rail seems to be Weaver and my Aimpoint won't fit. Not that it matters as I am going with a scope. It weighs in at around 6 kg scope and all.

I measured and the Sparta is .6 of a kilo more than the wood stock.

Nice. Looks good. It's .223? Will be interested to see if it shoots better with a heavier stock. Thanks for weighing it. I didn't have a scale that would accurately do that. Wondered about the difference.

Magpul BUS a no-go on Sparta stock

Just a head's up: I bought a set of Magpul BUS sights for the Sparta. They won't work. You can mount them but they wont flip up because they have two "wings" that depress to release the sight to the vertical position. The base of the picatinny rail on the Sparta is angled not vertical and the wings hit the angled portion and you can't raise the sight. I tried a #40 ARMS BUIS and it works because it releases differently and the angled rail isn't an issue. Just thought I would pass that along in case you were going to buy some Magpul BUS.
