Klunk, you should try another close-up with a broad diffuse source for main light and a second skimming spotlight to reveal the letters more. I think it is 1895. Now there's another letter or sign I just can't make out. Could you try a different lighting angle?
About that pierced primer, did you check firing pin protrusion? Mosins have a very easy way of adjusting the firing pin depth. First, look at the rear bolt knob; is the firing pin in the center flush with the knob's surface or is it lower?
If lower, take a small screwdriver and back that firing pin out a bit. Usually, the screw slot should be in line with the groove struck on the knob's surface.
Now it should be at the correct protrusion.
About Magnafluxing, one of my friend's has access to such an apparatus. I wonder if it would reveal faint stampings?
I know it is used sometimes in forensic labs to try and reveal ground serial numbers but I don't know if the metal surface needs to be buffed and polished before the test, in which case I would avoid doing so.
