In the last few months I have picked up a couple of steyrs, a carbine & a rifle. The carbine has a walnut stock & what looks like a birch handguard, the rifle is all birch( or some other light wood). Both have been refurbed at least twice. The carbine was still in cosmo, the rifle had been cleaned. When I cleaned the carbine a coating was removed from the handguard(it looked like walnut before) which I thought was dried cosmo. When I cleaned up the rifle a stain like substance began to come off. I thought someone had watco oiled it & tried to take it off but it soaked into the wood pretty good & a good portion of it remains. Then I read on the net about some arsenals using a type of stain to treat the stocks they refurbed. How likely is it that the stain was part of the refurb? Anybody else have a similar experiance?
