Spear hunting outlawed

Rob Gibson - Feb 8, 2018 / 6:43 am |

A viral video showcasing how an American hunter used a spear to kill a black bear in Alberta, is prompting a hunting update.

In large part because of the video shot by Josh Bowmar, spear hunting is now being banned in Alberta.

The video, posted on YouTube by hunter showed a bear being baited before the spear, with a camera attached, was launched at the animal from 11 to 14 metres away. The video also showed the man celebrating when the bear was hit.

After the video caused an uproar on social media, the province consulted with hunting groups and Alberta Environment and Parks received more than 3,900 responses from the public about the new regulations.

The Canadian Press reports the province has updated hunting rules to ensure big game animals do not suffer unnecessarily and to discourage reckless hunting.

Spears and spear-throwing tools such as atlatls are no longer allowed for big game hunting. Rifles, shotguns and conventional archery gear will still be legal.

The maximum penalty for using a prohibited weapon is $50,000 fine and one year in jail. If threatened or endangered species are involved, the penalty doubles.

The new rules will also require larger shotgun pellets to ensure the animal is killed quickly.

The updated rules come into effect in time for the 2018 hunting season.

Oh SNAP, I just got my tactifool spear al slicked up too.
Forward flashlight and lazer C-More attached and even had the blade 5 angled honed/ground using sapphire and diamond bladed sharpening implements spun counter clockwise to offset the Coriolis effect of the earths movement .
Yup, just got it last night delivered special delivery via Canada Post too.
It was a day late mind you, so off to CP for a refund on the delivery charges too.
Man, guess it goes up in the EE tonight after Dinner Break.
Tight Groups, err long chucks maybe.

So all the bleeding hearts that whine "why do you need a super ultra high powered rifle to go hunting with?" are now also whining about hunting with more traditional methods because #cruelty

Ironic, isn't it? For years, one of the arguments anti-hunting activists have used is that hunting isn't dangerous enough because firearms gave the hunter too much of an advantage. They said hunters should be restricted to primitive weapons like spears to make it a fair fight. When someone does it their way, though, they complain even more loudly.

Spear hunting outlawed...

If any hunters are tempted to applaude this new law, consider the captioned sentiment above and consider where the anti-hunting crowd will take that...

I highly doubt spear hunting would have become popular anyhow, it's pretty hard to become proficient with one. It's an issue that didn't need to be addressed.

"the province has updated hunting rules to ensure big game animals do not suffer unnecessarily and to discourage reckless hunting."

Depending on how this is legally worded, it has the potential to be a dangerous legislation.

This first step shall also be used in the long run to ban hunting with crossbows, then compound bows... Long bows next and then... you get the picture

My point... let one confused and wounded deer run into a town center and suddenly all methods cause "big game animals to suffer unnecessarily and are reckless hunting." Social media campaigns will drum up the necessary public will and political support... ie. BC grizzlies...

I had not considered that one. If a deer walked into town with a spear sticking in it or through it, the anti's would be screaming on social media!

Agreed. We are, unfortunately, in the age of social media, for all its lame duck hashtag activism, because people are generally too lazy to actually beat the street.

Even more dismal is that our elected officials are equally lazy, and cave to this armchair whinging.

This argument comes up often

Antis: just your hands you small dicked hunters

Hunters: say no more, using our hands

Antis: blarrrrrgh inhumane!

Hunters: WTH?

True of the matter is you can't win, ever.
