Special Forces AR accuracy?

Hey all,
TO set up my question...Recently met and went shooting with a retired US Coast Guard DOG operator ( Deploy able Operations Group) These are the special forces of the Coast Guard.
He has been out for a year and married a Canadian girl so a bit out of practice. Had him shoot my 92FS at 15 yds. 10 rds. into 1 inch hole, no flyers!! He told me he can do better with practice!!
Told me a few war stories ( His brother was a Para Jumper in Afghanistan!)
Anyways, he told me that the Marine Force Recon guys qualify by shooting CQB ARs at,( I'm not sure of the distance...I was so in awe of the guy, I wasn't listening too well!!) around 15, 20 or 25 yds.but they had to group a 30rd mag into a dime size group. Handguns, 15 rds into a quarter size group. Being an AR noob, I was wondering if you guys out there know what kind of specifications the Special Forces AR have to be that accurate? Is it tons of practice or specially tuned rifles or both? Do any of you have CQB ARs that can do this kind of grouping at the above distances? We're not talking long heavy barrelled guns, but the short 10.5 or 12 inch ones? Thanks!
 
Not trying to dog this guy here as I hold nothing but respect for what these people do, but I'm gonna call BS on the "required" dime size groups. I myself have trained with an ELITE group of Canadian special forces and they don't hold any standard like this. They were given an 8" accuracy standard. I've also trained with Jeff Gonzales (retired navy seal) and he also holds an 8" accuracy standard during all his shooting. Again, not trying to disrespect, but I think he was blowing smoke up your arse.

Saying that, I've been wrong before (it happened twice) ;-)

lots of people claim to be in sf, and it seems the ones that are in sf never claim to be in sf. Weird how that works out right...
same as people claiming to have university degrees or mbas, or pmps, cissps, the ones that have them never say that they have them unless specifically asked.
 
If you want to see how the very best can realistically shoot look at some videos of sniper competition. Units send their best shots, not their average ones, as there are bragging rights on the line. You will notice that their are very few dime sized groups to be seen shot by the elite of the elite.
 
Funny, the guy was quite humble and definitely had the moves. You can tell by the way he handled the guns that he was a pro. Gave me tips on target acquisition and stance. I've always shot Weaver stance but he had me try isosceles and man, did that feel weird!
So there are nothing special about Special Forces M4 types then? Other than the go fast switch and cans?
 
It is very possible they are required to shoot groups that size in deliberate fire exercises. Once they start shooting more tactically, time becomes the critical factor and therefore the group size is whatever is effective.
 
Did you guys make out? Sounds like you were extremely enamored by his romantic tales of tactical adventures.

Rule of thumb is there is 1000 wannabes for every actual special forces soldier. You never give these people attention, it only emboldens them into more wild fantasy.
 
Being able to shoot proficiently is a developed skill. Being physically fit in vital and culmination of training and genetics. Being able to survive in various climates, terrains and environments are through learned techniques.

The most important weapon in the arsenal for a SOF member is between the ears.

In regards to the handgun accuracy requirement, I doubt that most handguns they use couldn't do that even if they are put in a mechanical (Ransom) rest!

And remember, every shooter with a British accent has been (or is in) the SAS :)
 
Special Forces of the Coast Guard, I know some SF operators that laugh at the words "Coast Guard". If I added "special Forces" to it they would shoot me .....slowly.

Most guys in the other US military branches don't even consider the USCG part of the military.

Most people have no idea what special forces or special operations are. I can only assume most people think special operations are like conventional operations with better trigger pullers, fewer guys on ground, cooler kit and awesome sunglasses.

I have a pretty good idea, and I know Im in no mental shape or physical shape for it.
 
A 1" grouping means squat if its still six inches left of the POA, was he accurate?

As far as SF kit being any better, they can get cooler kit, but for the most part run what everyone else brings, they just have a higher kit density for the most part, every one has NODs, IRLAM, MBITR, IRSB etc... not one man in three or four yadda yadda yadda. They seem to get the better rifles etc because they train to a much higher standard for accuracy and speed under pressure. Superior marksmanship is also just one of the areas they have to be better, First Aid, Navigation, Demolitions, Vehicle or specialist gear operation, Comms, Languages and Ingress/Egress methods are but few of the areas covered.

No way that's a requirement. Although those are not terribly difficult standards to meet if you're shooting static and untimed.
