speed steel/race rifle shoot

I'm not sure if I'll pick up a red dot or keep just open sights, but I've got my race rifle built. I've managed to get a few plates worth of scrap steel rounded up. I'm not quite sure yet how I want to build the stands for the steel, they need to be easily set up/taken down, and transported. Any good ideas? The simpler the better. Here's a pic of my version of a race rifle.

Anyone else got race rifle type builds finished or on the go? Let's see em!

My son and I built a pair of race rifles... when speed shooting the scopes were removed via QD mounts and reflex sights added. The were very quick handling.

I'll get some pics tomorrow but I just built, a friend did the welding, 5 bases and plate hangers and had 4-10", 5-12" and 4 18x24" 1/4" mild steel plates cut to get the Backyard Steel Challenge going. Rimfire only BTW. I hope my old PACT timer's hearing is better than mine so I don't have to buy a new one though with the short barrel and multi port comp the rifle should be loud enough, lol. I'm just using my CQB 10/22 to start with and I am going to try a See-All sight first and then a C-More Railway 8MOA and see which I like better. I'll try the BUIS of course but with my old eyes I don't think they will be my final choice. The sight that is on there was impossible to see in bright light so it is filed away in a drawer now.

Nice rifle elimsprint. What distance are you setting up the steel plates for your backyard challenge? I'm thinking with the size of them that 50 yards should work. Maybe 25? I also need to find a PACT timer. Maybe we can get a rimfire speed challenge going with a few standardized courses utilizing a set number of steels. Honor system like the 50 yard group challenge of coarse.

As for timers, there are some phone app ones that supposedly work just fine or https://www.freedomventures.ca/products/ru-ready-speed-timer-3000 or http://fasttoys.net/ca/CED-Canada-7000T-Tactical-Timer/ the 2 main ones in use up here. I don't know if anyone carries PACT up here but you can order them from the states. http://www.brownells.com/shooting-accessories/range-gear/shot-timers/club-timer-iii-prod22885.aspx

We built the stands from scrap 2x3 and 2x4 1/4" wall tubing. Standard 2x3's and 2x4's fit in some of it OK and are quite tight in others. If you are buying new tubing check the fit. I have access to a planer so it will be easy to get everything fitting right. I made the top plate holders so they can slide up and down the posts so I can easily get the targets to the correct height. The plates will be held on by 3/8" carriage bolts bolted to the plates and then to the mount with a built in 5 deg down tilt to deflect splatter.

Looking good Kim, how do the target plates attach to the top stand bracket?

3/8" carriage bolts bolted to the plate and then held on the holder with 2 nuts and flat washers. I just have to decide where the holes in the plates need to go so all of the back mount is covered so you won't hear it ting if you miss the plate.

That's awesome. I'm a little behind on the target building but hope to get it done soon. I need to order the timer still but just bought a new shotgun and have to let the waters calm before anything else arrives in the mail.
