I have a S&W 28 Highway Partolman; the 357 Mag housed in an N-frame; I have a set of S&W factory target grips on it that I purchased off another member here.

I was planning on buying a few speedloaders for it, but the different webpages said to make sure that the speedloaders will fit the grip clearance. Do any of you have experience with this setup and will the HKS or Safariland speedloaders work with the clearance available?

I assume this older revolver is a square frame and the target grips you refer to are the nice walnut ones. I would suggest buying some Hogue rubber grips and using those while using the speedloaders if you are competing. You can take a sharp boxcutter knife and trim away any part that might interfere. If you mark it out you'll get a smooth cut, the speed loaders will drop right in and it won't interfere with your grip.

S&W stocks and speedloaders

Older stocks might not have enough clearance. S&W changed the design of the top left side panel of their stocks to allow ease of use (of speedloaders). The following images show both the old style (on a stainless N frame) and the newer style (on a blued L frame).

Smith & Wesson made factory Target stocks in both the older (non-relieved) style and the later (relieved) style. You can see which style more closely resembles the profile of the top left side of your grip panel. If it is the older, non-relieved, profile, you may well be in the market for a new set of stocks.

I have the older target stocks and am able to use HKS speed loaders in my M28.

I can only get the first third of the cartridges into the cylinder, but it works.

I love the stocks, so changing them out is not an option; I just swapped out a set of rubber grips for these stocks.

Thank you for the info Stevo. Do you find any issues with only 1/3 of the cartridge in the cylinder?

I never had an issue using Comp 2's with K, L, or N frame Smith's, but for most Smith revolvers I switched to Pachmayr 'Professional' grips. J frames can be a bit of a pig with loaders though, used to use a speed strip with those. Incidently, the Model 28 is an excellent revolver and very underrated, heavy enough to soak up recoil and my old one was extremely accurate, even with hot loads.

I have a S&W Model 28 as well and just bought 3 more safariland speed loaders, I still have the original wood grips ans there is some wiggling required to get the rounds in but if you rnot too worried about speed its not a big deal.

great revolver

Agreed. My 28 is my favourite handgun out of the ten that I have.
