SPEER Grand Slam bullets

My .30-06 Husqvarna shoots 3/4 " groups with the 180's and they kill moose dead (and deer too). Have had good weight retention (when I can find them :) )

I have loaded them 250 gs for my 338 WM and accuracy seems to be there but have never seen them perform on game, I do hear good things however.
In that caliber I perfer a softer bullet, like a Game King. I have no doubt the Grand slam bullet shoud perform excellent as well. Been around for a while.

I tried the older Grand Slams in two rifles, which if my memory serves me correctly were a 7 x 57 and a .270. In both cases the accuracy was pathetic, even for this not-so-accurate shooter. Those two experiences turned me off the idea of using them on game, and I have not done so.

This topic has come up before, and a lot of very experienced hunters and shooters DO like the Grand Slams, and HAVE had good accuracy and good performance from them. I am thinking about fellows whose opinions I respect and who (I believe) really HAVE DONE what they claim to have done. (Both on this current thread and the previous ones.) Sometimes on the forums there is a bit of, shall we say, nose-stretching, and I guess I discount a lot of what I read here and elsewhere on the Net. But if a whole bunch of experienced guys say that the Grand Slam is their "go-to" bullet for hunting, I am inclined to believe them, even if I am not going to use this bullet myself.

Chrysler vs Ford vs GM, methinks.........I drive Fords and shoot Noslers........

grand slams work

I've shot a bunch of deer mulies and whitetails with 165 gr speer grand slams from my 06 and the terminal ballistics have always been impressively devastating (to the deer). You can't go wrong with these bullets. I used them because my rifle shot them accurately. On the same note i've killed deer just as dead with regular federal 150 gr and they cost less. i am a bit more seasoned now so this is my current logic. based on my experience i wouldn't get too caught up in all the bullet hype. just shoot the animals in a place that is fatal and they will die. any chunk of metal/lead combo flying at 2000+ fps hitting something in a vital organ will be fatal. That is my opinion anyways. Do whatever you feel confident in. I think that that is most important. good luck

grand slam

I used them years ago in 160gr 7MM in a Rem Mag, i personally don't like their ballistics but it dropped my first moose at 100 yards with a shoulder shot and recovered the bullet just inside the hide on the opposite side with excellent exspansion. It was a big bull from northern B.C. weighing 900lbs field dressed.

Ditto and don't hit the meaty parts so you will have something to eat later.

The 180's are about the only bullet that shoots in my Super Grade 300 Winchester. Them and Prot. Point Partitions. Dunno why...maybe something to do with the shape? Normal Partitions didn't shoot worth a damn, nor Barnes (old days before coated or TSX's), or non-premium softpoints. Damndest thing.

Here's some pic's of a 150gr. Speer Grand slam recovered from a bull elk...Rifle was a BLR in 308 win. Distance was about 30 yards....
139.3grs. retained weight...
Bullet broke a rib....went through the heart and got stuck in the hide on the off side...

I've always had good luck with the terminal ballistics of the the 165 gr in my 06 and the 285 gr out of my .375 H&H mag. They seem to expand well and hold together. On the down side they are not the most accurate bullet that I've shot but if you're hunting in bush where the average shot is under 100 yds probably more like 50 or 60 yds they are a fine bullet. I have used the GS in a number of Rifle over the years, and there are some rifles that simply cannot shoot them accuraetely, but when a rifle likes them, they really like them. I took my bull elk this year with GS and was very satisfied with the results
