Hey fellas..am gonna load up some 165 Grandslams for the 308.....does anybody have a Speer manual?
If so,can you give me a minimum and max load using Varget and the COL they list....I just need a starting point...thank you

With any 165-grain bullet, just use the Hodgdon data. Personally, I'd start around 42 grains and work my way up to a MAX of 46 grains of Varget. I'd expect to see the best results around 45 to 45.5, depending upon the barrel, but I would never exceed the max in the .308.

As for OAL, determine that for yourself, either using a Stoney Point or using the old-fashioned black felt pen method. I'd start by seating them .020" off the lands.

Bob,

My Speer manual (#13) doesn't list data for the 165 gr. Grand Slam with Varget in .308.

It does list:

150 gr Grand Slam w/ Varget: Min. 43.0 gr - 2632 fps, Max. 47.0(compressed) - 2856 fps. - COL: 2.680"

168 gr HPBT Match w/Varget: Min. 42.0 - 2539 fps, Max. 46.0 - 2751 fps - COL: 2.800"

180 gr. Grand Slam w/Varget: Min. 40.0 - 2402 fps, Max. 44.0 - 2591 fps - COL: 2.680"

Although it doesn't give a Varget load for the 165 gr. Grand Slam, you should be fine using the load data for the 168 gr HPBT Match - it falls pretty much right in the middle of the load data for the 150 gr and the 180 gr Grand Slams. The COL given for the 165 gr Grand Slam is 2.685".

Thank you sir....just the perfect starting point I was looking for...much appreciated:beerchug:

thet's 'cause you'll got one of them lawyerized manuals page 217 of #11 manual gives a sec density of .247 and a b/c 0f .393- i don't have the listing for varget powder because this came out before varget- long time- just use the data for the 168 and you'll be close - incidentally, the grand slam has the 2nd poorest b/c of the bunch, only the round nose is worse- both the boat tail (.477) and the spitzer do better(.433)

44 grains of Varget over a 165 Speer GS with a Winchester LR Primer yielded a .713 group for 3 shots at 100 yds. The largest group was .892,this being measured from center to center of the impact holes....plenty good enuff for me
I tried to mark each group individually, but gave up after I kept making the hole larger

Dang, you got those loaded up and to the range in a hurry, eh? :D

Nice shooting, looks like you'll be hard pressed to find a load that doesn't shoot well out of that rifle. Was it a T3 you were loading for, I forget?
