So i'm a mild idiot, i went and bought my dream poodleshooter a springfield loaded (knock it or not i'm super happy)
I needed a half decent scope before leaving the store and like a child in a candy shop grabbed the first thing i could reach. Vortex viper 6-20 f:P:2:

Sooo, now having upgraded to a scope on my chiappa 22
I get to rescope the m1a:dancingbanana:

Choices hurt:

Nightforce shv 3-10x42mm
Nightforce shv 4-14x50mm f1 (or 56mm sfp)

Other recommendations?
(Not the Vortex pst!)

This is a 'precision' blaster and go too for 400y backdoor shooting and day trips up yonder to 600+
Obviously a 50x zoom is not going to get me moa with this gun, so keep it practical!

Sitting at cabelas last night, was soo close to buying the 10x. But is that enough for steel at range.....

The Nightforce 3-10 is plenty, as well as being well-proportioned for the rifle.

You may find that a larger objective makes the whole thing simply too huge.

I have a NM M1A that I fixed right up with the smith Enterprizes mount and brake , bipod , rail ,coyote cheek riser and more sparing no exspense have a scope in a near mount that I switch to other rifles with a meopta zd 6-24 . Now to tell the truth when I get sick of switching scopes I will put a Bushnell 10x on it with a mil dot retical , I use this on my k31 and it is good for 500yds (which I do lots on my back yard range) and more . But even my NM m1a is not a precision gun and at 500 get 10-18" groups (it does much better with the gas shut off)and really no point to try further , so IMO the Bushnell 10x ($200-300)is lots and what I will leave on my M1A as I have other guns that can take better advantage of the high power scope

Nikon Pro Staff are great scopes for the price, not to mention close to a century of reputation for making quality optics for cameras and scientific equipment.

I will add the m1a is a beast with a different recoil than bolt guns , I would suggest a tried and proven sturdy built scope , it will for sure test the warranty on other scopes eventually ( which might be fun too) . Anybody shook one apart ?

Curious to hear how you like that SHV, that's a good mag range for a M14 type. I've got a Mark IV 3.5-10x40 on my M14 and it's great, shoot it out to 475 yards (but have used it out to 800 on my bolt gun). I also have the SHV 4-14x50F1 on my bolt gun and have used that out to 1280 or so. I wrote a review on it not too long ago.

Bushnell Tactical 10X40. Very high value scope and looks and works great on my M1A. Has a 1" tube but can go out to 800 m no problem. Can use the lower half mil dots to get to 1000 but its max effective range is more like 800.

^^ This, no joke.

This model is perfect for ranges up to 1000y, for 2 MOA (and larger) targets IMHO. Smaller targets will need better glass and more magnification.

Most dealers are selling the model for under a grand, I picked one up on sale between X-mas and new years for $850 taxes paid (a smoking deal).

I have killed 3 Vortex Viper PST scopes on M-14 pattern rifles. I have a Bushnell that has seen close to 1500 rnds on several different M-14's, and not a hiccup.

The Burris Veracitor (sp?) line is also "better lasting" than the Vortex line as well, but at a slightly higher price point than the Bushnell Elite Tactical line.

The Nightforce will take the abuse, no question. But at 2-3x the cost.

My $.02

Nothing wrong with Nightforce. But another plug for the Bushnell Elite 3200 10X40. This is a super deal. I've used this scope on my M14 out to 1000y. The scope has lots of elevation adjustments, accurate clicks and bright optics. You can't beat it for value. Here's a pic of it on my M14:

Optically the shv is identical to the nxs without the ruggedness combat proven durability (so says nf webpage)
Turrets are ok, i like my bushnell 6500 elite much better for adjustment.
Not sure if it's an accurate adjustment yet, but i'll know when i jump to 400y after i'm finished zeroing and load workup.

So far very impressed.
Haven't shot with the glass yet as i needed to change to slimer rings for more eye relief.

Kudos to all of you for the advice. Really settled my mind on going with a 10x.
