Hi,
I was wondering why people are always switching the price of a for-sale rifle to SPF in their WTS posts in the EE: It's pretty annoying when we want to look back and see what a particular rifle is going for...

Cheers,

Sold Pending Funds.

SOLD is when the money is in your hands, SPF is when the deal is agreed and the money is on the way. SPF can change back to FOR SALE if the money never shows up. :)

Right, I understand that. I'm not against not using the special status that means a deal is always (edit: meant "almost") done...I'm more against the fact, or rather I don't quite understand why people do this, that sellers replace the price of the rifle for the accronym SPF.

Example, a rifle is listed as follows:

Remington 700 BDL 30-06 for sale, 2 extra mags. Asking 500$

You go back a few days later and the post reads:

Remington 700 BDL 30-06 for sale, 2 extra mags. Asking SPF$

I'd rather think it should look like this:

Remington 700 BDL 30-06 for sale, 2 extra mags. Asking 500$ (SPF)

Now in 2 months when another guys tries to sell one for 800$ and I'm finally ready to purchase, I won't be able to see what they were going for...

If people are allowed to do this, shouldn't be wipe out everything older than 30 days in the EE? Those old posts are completely useless, no?

Maybe I'm just missing something...

It is unfortunate that sold ads are deleted and we have no archive of what people were asking for the items. I'd for one would like to be able to search out how much something sold for in the past.

I agree. I would like to see what an item sells for. Sometimes it's to see what I missed out on, and sometimes to get a reference price if I'm selling a similar item.

Yes and no.

Yes it would be nice to research what the price range was that a specific piece went for. but

No, they can't keep this up as the board only has so much storage space for posts , pics and links.

Something's got to go.

I agree that it would be nice to have an archive of sold items, including the price.

The pics are remotely hosted (i.e. we just link to them). How does that take up any more server space than plain text?

In theory, we already have the archive! It would just take an effort on people's part to not modify their posts and remove the price. I'm not quite sure how long the posts are kept for. I think they're kept for a while though...

You're right about the linking to the image part. Only takes up a few bytes.

Isn't it board policy to mark sold items and then delete them? I thought that sold items are marked "Please delete" and then deleted.

In theory using the new pre-fix system (which includes an SPF option) there is no need to edit the text of the ad itself at all.

U missed my point, the SPF lasts a day or two, just to tell people not to pester the seller , right after that THE WHOLE AD is DELETED, that saves the space of the whole ad.

Don't forget, not everything goes for the asking price. If Dude A, listed a gun for $800, and Dude B made an offer of $700, which Dude A accepted, then leaving the price in the ad would be misleading. Also, it's no-one's business, but the buyer and seller, how much money actually changed hands. If you watch the EE long enough, you get a good idea what things usually go for. A quick trick is to watch how fast things go at different prices. If a price is too high, it'll get BTT'd a few times. Too low, and it'll be gone within the first dozen or so views. Most fairly priced items are off the board in 2-3 days. YMMV.
