Now, I know the above seems absurd but please read on.

I just sent off my RPAL application 3 weeks ago and have spent some time researching. I have had my PAL for about 3 years now and do the LR/Precision stuff (I like to think at least). The lesson I have learned coming from that world is that if you actually like the sport it costs big bucks.

My long range rifle story is like this:
Bought cheapo M700 Tactical rifle
Spent butt loads of money on upgrades
Rifle still didn't shoot so sold upgrades (lost money on sale)
Ordered a custom made (Chou Brothers - highly recommended)
Sold first rifle
Bought Sako TRG 22
Still want an AI as well

I have shot handguns before (Glock, hi-power, HK, etc.) and will go try out some more before making the final decision but my question is this. Should I just go to the top of the heap off the get go? I know the CZ75 is a favourite gun of many and I know the Sphinx is a super fancy CZ clone. Is doing up a CZ75 like putting money into a Remmy when instead I should just go to the AI right away so to speak?

I am not worried about not liking handguns - I already know I do so I just want to make the best decision.

Thanks for any input.

I would suggest the CZ75 to start. The reason being that it is a full size gun with a longer sight radius to make it easier for more accurate shooting.
The CZ is also a full steel frame and slide, making it heavier for less recoil. The Sphinx is a fantastic gun, but the SDP is a compact model with a threaded "short" barrel. My understanding is that it was designed more as a "carry" gun for our neighbours south of the border.
My opinion would be that the CZ75 would be easier to shoot more accurately, especially for a newer shooter.

I don't get the logic of going with a cheap gun first and then getting something more expensive down the road (especially when the difference between "cheap" and "expensive" is only a few hundred dollars). It's not like buying your first car. Your first handgun should be one that you like and can afford. Sphinx makes great guns that are of much higher quality than the original CZ. I don't see why it wouldn't make for a good first handgun.
