Well I am finally convinced that I NEED to start gathering the parts to do my first AR build - a 7.5" PDW  Having ordered a few tidbits already, I now have to make the decision on the base of the build; the lower.

I have narrowed the choices down to either a Stag or a Spikes; both great quality from what I have read, and both around the same price point. So the question is which stripped lower would those with experience building ARs recommend and why?

I look forward to your input, thank you.

Go Spike's, I've got one personally and the finish is great. Also, as a matter of personal opinion, Spike's markings are SO much better than Stags. Just my $0.02, I think that you'll find either one will work quite nicely for you.

I'm not a fan of the duelling dingalings on the spikes. I'll take the deer head anyday ;)

OP, a lower is pretty much a lower. Pick the one with markings you like best, and don't give it any extra thought.

I'm inclined to go with the STAG based on reputation, personal experience and product support from ArmsEast. For the most part, Stag is CMT, which is a major parts supplier for Colt and other government contractors, along with numerous commercial AR assemblers.

Same here; I'd take the deer head any day too.
I have owned a couple of Stags over the years and they were top notch. Great quality, great reliability - they shoot and do it very well.:D

Both! :D I'm a lefty, so when I built my first one, I used Stag for the upper and Spike's for the lower. Couldn't be happier.

Are you planning on matching the lower with the same upper?

I've done quite a bit a research when I was planning out my AR build. Keep in mind that the Stag upper does not have m4 feed ramps. (Not completely sure if this is still the case though) Because i wanted to match both the lower and upper (with feed ramps), I went with the Spikes one.

I love my Spikes 7.5 PDW. Functions well and looks great!

I'm pretty sure the current Stag upper receivers have M4 cutouts on them. Mine is older and doesn't, but the Stag barrel I bought from AE had the feed ramps. I had this discussion with them and decided the non-cutout receiver with the M4 feed ramp barrel extension wasn't going to be an issue, especially in a semi-auto (others on this site had the same opinion).

While they are unimportant, you are correct, current Stag Arms are all M4 ramped.

errrrrr......ummmm......

As said above. Flip a coin.
The Spikes does have a slightly darker ( black) finish to it. (unless that was just the ones I have had)

That is about it

Some great input here, thanks to those who have posted. I believe I have made the decision to go with a Stag. Given the great things I hear about service from Arms East, I will drop them an email and place the order.

Anyone know if they sell matched upper/lower sets? Originally I was looking to use a Daniel Defense upper (already have one), but I figure I might as well build off a matched set.

DD upper would be fine with a stag lower. DD is in my opinion a little nicer than the stags anyways. Why not just get a DD lower and match it with your upper if you're picky? Just curious.
Or;
You could just buy a complete stag and get a new barrel/buffer assembly.
You could use the stock parts you want to swap out off the stag to build on your DD upper as a spare gun project.

I wish I could afford a new AR. mmmmmm.....BCM......
