Well I took my new Savage 12 BVSS .223 varmint rifle out on Sunday to break in. I am almost set up to reload and Sunday was just to get some rounds through it and get the scope more or less sighted in. I am going to use this rifle for target shooting mostly, and I deceided to do the shoot one clean routine etc. 5 times, then 3, then 5 etc. as the target crowd like to do.
Very time consuming, more cleaning than shooting. Anyways I was just shooting cheap Winchester white box 55 gr ammo and didn't expect much in accuracy. Once at 100 yds I would shoot and maybe two would be 1.5 inches apart then I would get one that would be 4 or so inches apart and it wasn't me. This happened several times.
The next day I was looking at my brass and found 5 cases with split necks down to the shoulder. I was thinking these may have been the wayward shots?
I fired a total of 40 rounds and 5 were split. I have never had this happen with new ammo before. The brass does look thin at the neck, if I put it beside some federal you can see a difference. Any thoughts on this much appreciated. Cheers Roscoe

I have had factory winchester white box split on me as well.
I think they did'nt anneal the brass correctly.
The split stuff went into the trash and I reloaded the rest a couple of times,
it seemed to work ok.

My savage 223 does the same with winchester ammo. Moved on to hornady ammo and was under an inch. On to reloads no though.

Thanks for your replys. I got some Laupa brass today and pretty much have everything I need now to reload. I have some 52 grain ammo that I am going to trade for 69 grain ammo, my rifle is a 1 in 9 twist, I think the heavier ammo will work better. Cheers Roscoe

My savage is 1:9 twist also and have had best results with 36gr-55gr bullets. I have some 60's and they are alright ut nowhere near as good as the lighter ones. The 50-53 shoot the best for me
