Some years ago, when "common sense" prevailed, I went with the police to talk to a fellow who was threatening suicide. Long story shortened, we took all his guns and kept them at my place. (I was a firearms dealer at the time). I noticed that one of the sporting rifle's barrel was split right at the business end. IIRC, the split was about an inch or two. It was hardly noticeable and was split in two places, opposite each other. Could be a scary thing if you were standing nearby if it was fired. I eventually gave the guns back and warned the owner about the split. I guess the moral of this story is: KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR BARRELS!!!
