Sportco model 44

So basically, you center the target in the front sight, then center the front sight in the rear sight?

Im probably going to start off simple at 100 yards. What type of targets shout I be using (size and color)?

Pie plate. Whatever.

Your eye should naturally center the front in the rear if you are close enough to it and it is the right size. Hard to describe but when it lines up it will look clearer.

Google 600m reduced targets, I downloaded and printed off a ton, but can't remember what site. If you're making your own, then a black center, and white background.

At 100 yards/m I use a round aiming mark the size of a large coffee can cut out of black Bristol board, stapled to a sheet of white Bristol board. Works well with the same aperture that I use at 300m.

If anyone wants to part with a lefty one, drop me a line.

No more proprietary barrels available from AU. Adapters and conventional barrels can be had for a very reasonable sum without any hassles on our end from TS Engineering.

Went through it a month ago. They are what they are, by and large good shooters and obsolete target rifles.

Good luck to find left hand Sportco 44 rifle.
While attending Salmon Arm gun show two weeks ago I asked Paul Reibin about them.
He said that couple of thousands right handed were imported but only handful left handed ones.
Since early 80' I attended hundreds of gun shows, read hundreds if not thousands of gun papers and never came across LH Sportco 44 so when I saw one at Paul's shop
in early 90' you should see how fast my wallet jumped out of my pocket....

Finally got around to getting out to the range. Shot about 40 rounds of South African Surplus through it using a front and rear rest as I was mainly trying to zero the sights and see what it can do. Managed to get a few decent near 1-2" groups at 100 meters but nothing consistent. Although apperently I was starting to group a little better towards the end. However I am positive that was a combination of my mediocre shooting that day and the ammo.

I am sure with better ammo and a little more practice The rifle will perform. I also didn't know how I would like the sights but I do like them, will take some time getting used to them but after the first twenty rounds I started to get the hang of them.

It sounds like your on the right track, 2moa groups with surplus ammo is generally about as good as Sportco could be counted on for. That tells me that your sight picture is reasonable and you are shooting it well. The rifle must also be performing well, handloaded ammo with bullet weight up to 155 grns might surprise you. No longer a popular rifle on the 1000yard line of Target rifle matches but still a capable performer.

Export from Australia could be problematic.
Paul Reibin would be the first person I would contact. It would be worth contacting Ganderite as well.
Of the three rifles mentioned, the Sportco would be my first choice.
I recall the last year that the cadets were shooting Sportcos at onnaught, the ammunition supplied was the British RG loaded with a 155gr HPBT target bullet.
Cleaning rods and rubber mallets were supplied along the line, and the sound of hammering was often heard, as stuck cases were removed.

Tiriaq,

I was a coach for the advanced course 96/97. It was black hills ammo. Seen more than one cadet come off the line with blown primers.

Maynard,

The sights I shot with in the 90's were 1/4 minute. Maybe earlier sights were 1/3 minute?

The first Central sights where 1/3 minute. Not sure what year the cadet movement change over to what the rest of Canada was using, 1/4 minute. There are still some 1/3 minute sights out there and still in use. A sure way to get a strange look from your coach when you lay down for a team match and tell him you have 1/3 minute sights.
