Hey guys and gals. I was just in the cabelas website and have this dog gps system on sale. I was wondering if any of you guys run these on your hound and was wondering how they work god, bad, or otherwise. They are on sale for over 60% off. Thanks in advance.

I saw that too. My understanding was that gps tracking collars were illegal in Canada (I was wanting a Garmin Astro system). Something about the CRTC thinking it was not necessary or some such BS. Interested in any responses.

"GPS Central does not carry the Garmin Astro product. It is not available for purchase in Canada where it is illegal to sell or use it. Its unapproved frequency interferes with channels not approved for civilian use. Fines for individuals are $25,000 with possible additional confiscation of property including automobiles. Electronics retailers face penalties of $50,000 or more. See Industry Canada."

Yes I know and realize the garmin tracking systems are illegal in Canada but the sportdog one are not. Thank you for your concern just looking to get feedback on how they work. Thank you

That is a smoking deal, I have use sportdog e collars for years and they have outlasted both the dogtra and tritronics collars I've used. I've not used the tracking collar but at that price I don't think you can go wrong but again its not my $$$$ . Here's a review h ttp://www.gundogsupply.com/sportdog-tek-review.html

They are on sale for $299 from like $799 or something. I was going to run them on my hounds for deer. You get the handheld gps and 1 collar

I have a gps collar on dogs 5 days a week. It depends what you want it to do for you. I've got an Alpha and had it since it came out and right now the Dogtra pathfinder looks pretty impressive but I wouldn't switch because I don't want to use my phone, I want a separate handheld.

The sportdog 1 isn't much of an upgrade over a VHF telemetry system IMO.

And if your deer hunting big timber blocks and swamps I'd want a unit with maps.

The handheld Tek 1 doesn't have maps it just shows 2 dots and approx distance between the handheld and collar. I have one and use it from time to time, mostly when running my brittany in field trials. It's insurance if you don't want to run the risk of losing your dog. As long as you're aware of the limitations it's a good rig and at that price point hard to say no to. The Tek2 on the other hand has maps and a much better unit from what I been told. I also have an Alpha unit which I run when I hunt just because it has maps, although not "available in canada".

Pathfinder is $560CAD that's with the Bluetooth receiver and collar. It is also a training (shock)system. So if you want to consider a shock system would cost you probably $300 for a handheld and collar- the tracking part of the Pathfinder is actually cheaper than the sportdog tek 1 and does a whole lot more.

And you can run it on a smartphone (new or old), iPod, tablet. You don't need service if you download the maps prior.

Quick track makes a similar system (it was released prior to the dogtra) but wasn't aswell received, called the OMNI.

Unfortunately I believe a new Alpha and Tt15 are about $1k CAD right now.

Have a few 2.0 units.

If not running boot licker dogs like GWP and labs there a must have.

Three hand units and three collars great product.
