So I believe I have inhereted a sported swede 6.5x55 mauser but with no caliber markings on the barrel. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Lmk what you fellas think , cheers.

That's what it is, but why do you classify it as junk????

There's a very good chance it will outshoot many of the socalled finest commercial sporters in your safe.

Someone on CGN took thier Swedish Mauser with cast gas checked handloads to Black Canyon, Arizona.
Won some rifle competitions.

Myself I prefer K98 actions however the Swedish rifles rarely disappoint if they are not shot out from years of use.

Some will find the "#### on close" a bit unnerving - no different than the No.1 and No. 4 Lee Enfields. Being Mauser, original safety and bolt was for using the iron sights and charger (stripper clip) loading - mounting a scope (in a conventional "modern" manner) means modifying those things. Once past that, perfectly adequate hunting rifles! The original Norway / Swede committee that designed the round - late 1880's / early 1890's - had an explicit design parameter to be able to drop a horse at range - was their plan to defend their peninsula from over land invasion, in an era of horse drawn supply conveyances.

Hey, Andy! Very interesting pictures - Weaver scope mounts - Really! Who uses that any more? - I must have at least 10 or 12 sets installed here, so at least two of us! I recently learned that the silver antelope head on the scope turret, was the marking for the Tasco World Class scopes - I have a 2-7 and a 3-9 here. From folk who knows a lot more about them than I do, they were built, at that time, equivalent or better to anything made by Leupold, Redfield or Weaver.

Older tasco were built in Japan and are decent for sure, have a few kicking around.

Not my pics - rodngun's for ease of viewing. I should have stated that.

That said, I now use Millet windage adjustable scope rings, but I have had quite a few Weavers and a few Tasco scopes, now largely Bushnell with a Sightron where it counts.

I have several mauser sporters as well - all M98's, but I've had a M96 that shot well.

For me, is quite difficult to identify which model of Tasco, a particular scope is - they made from very, very good to about pure junk - mostly all were made in Japan, when Tasco was owned by Tanross. Since Tanross's demise, the newest owners of Tasco brand I think are ATK?? Same corp that owns Bushnell, Weaver, Simmons, etc. and various other brands. I have seen an advert for a "Tasco" scope - model is named "Silver Antelope" - does not have that logo like on the World Class scopes, and is/was made in China. To be seen / to be heard whether the new ATK Tasco is similar to high end or low end Tanross Tasco...

The 6.5x55 round is an unusual shape/dimension. If it will chamber, it is 99.8% the correct round for the rifle.

I have two sporters made on Swede actions. Both are a joy to shoot and seem to be inherently accurate.

One has taken a moose. One shot with a 160gr round nose soft point.

Hard to tell from picture, but that might be a "turned down" bolt handle like from M94 or some M38 - requires scope to be installed higher to clear. M96 and some M38 had straight handles - so need significant mods to work with a scope. I bought a few "sporterized" Swede mauser bolts from TradeEx - handles shaped similar to FN Sporters - so far as I can tell, allow about lowest possible scope mounting. Amazing to me, like many Mausers of various flavours, that those bolts passed headspace checks easily, in "new-to-them" receivers.

There will be no caliber markings that I know of on a military Swede rifle - a Swedish crown on bottom side of a NOS barrel (close to the receiver) that I got from TradeEx. Sweden sold a lot of them as surplus in 1950's, so has been 70 plus years - could be chambered for anything by this time?? That I have done - cerrosafe chamber cast and measure, to figure out what I had in a certain rifle. As mentioned above - a Swede 6.5x55 is a bit unusual case size, if you have accurately made ammo - head and rim is larger than 308 or 30-06. Chances are good if a Swede 6.5x55 cartridge does chamber, that is likely what it is - but is a "chance", not a guarantee. Also, the groove to groove size will be around .264" plus or minus, so if you measure .30-something, is not likely original.

I had read there was a USA company making them into 308 Win. Many, many were shot as they were converted, but some failures, apparently. A proper size 6.5x55 will not chamber into a 308 Win chamber, though.

safe to shoot 6.5x55 swede or no?

FACTORY 6.5x55 Swede - YES

Be careful if someone offers you handloads.

Many folks, including myself, hotrod this cartridge for use in rifles with stronger actions.

That rifle, with the original 6.5x55 chambering, is adequate+ for any big game animal in North America

I looked for one of those at gun shows for years and never got one because I just didn't like the examples available.

Don't need one any more but at one time they were a big "Want" on my list.

I still have an unaltered Model 96 made in 1911 though.

Damn, that looks exactly like mine. Rear sight was removed, scope base installed, threaded muzzle removed, bolt turned down. I also upgraded the trigger.

The bolt on that rifle wasn't altered. Many 96/38 rifles were fitted with turned down bolts when FTRed.

The factory bend isn't really enough for proper low scope mounting, even the bent ones still need bending/grinding to clear a scope.
The one in the pic looks like a cut/weld handle.
