Have a sporter barrel on my Savage A22.

Contemplating trying to run it next ORPS that has a free hand stage (B22FV front heavy). The gun shoots right around MOA at 100 yards. And balances nicely (enjoy shooting this free hand). Have a vortex DB Tactical 4-16 on it. But unlike the B22 FV I have been shooting for my first two events. this one would fall under open class (aftermarket trigger). Have noticed you don’t see many (or any really)open class rigs running sporter barrels and just curious why. 22lr don’t seem to over heat the barrel even after hundreds of rounds. Is there some other major down fall to running this here that I over looking?

I could swap back factory trigger that was pretty good I just really like the Jared trigger in it. The stock was swapped but it is a factory optionable stock (Boyd’s At-One). So with a trigger swap this could be a production class rifle I suppose if I better off just trying that.

Not really worried about doing well just more curiosity than anything from a relatively newer shooter (bit more than a year)

I'm using my Norinco NS522 for PRS matches, and it doesn't have nearly as heavy a barrel as most of the guys shooting open class either. I do pretty good with it though, first match this year I was in the top 10 out of 35 or 40 shooters. I'm in open because I made a better stock and did a trigger job, but don't really care what class I'm in either. I only started shooting these matches last year. It seems that the real competitive guys like to have a front heavy rifle so that it balances on a barricade, and a heavy barrel is one way to get as much weight as far forward as possible. Some of them are shooting rifles that weigh over 20lbs too, which doesn't seem like that much fun to haul around shooting in the bush like I also do.

Many like to run chassis... which are very butt heavy. So you need to add weight to the front to balance. a big heavy barrel adds alot of weight to the front (as would a tuner).

My bolt has a sporter barrel, tuner and front stock weights... balances well without being overly heavy.

The super heavy open rifles can be difficult to shoot during unsupported positional stages... but the game has evolved to have fewer, if any, of these.

many rifles are now well into the 20lbs+ range. Balancing well off props for sure but can you support a rifle this heavy for precise offhand and unsupported shooting?

Granted this need has diminished over the years but these stages do pop up now and then.

A chassis and bull barrel 22 shooting offhand, can be supported reasonably well with a proper sling. As soon as the silhouette crew start stepping up to be match directors for 22 PRS stuff things will change. Unless competitors don’t show up to shoot those matches.

ORPS seems to have an un-supported stage quite often, somebodies a fan

The origin of the shooters who started the CRPS/ORPS is military ranges with slung 3 position shooting. I have considered purring together a lightweight chassis rifle to see if it’s competitive, but the options with PRS features are not inexpensive.
