So I finally figured out to post pics so here we go... I stopped by a BC pawn shop last summer and found this old Enfield. I know its from 1918 and from Australia, can anyone else tell me more about this rifle?

1918 Lithgow (Australia) No.1 Mk.III converted to No.1 Mk.III* The 18.5 tons has something to do with pressure per square inch. Someone please correct me if im wrong.

Interesting change over marking where they went back to the magazine cutoff (at least) post-WWI. You'd wonder why they didn't just punch out the asterisk instead of the whole "MkIII*". Wanted it to be unmistakable perhaps.

Quite so: built as a Mark III* for World War One, then converted BACKWARDS to a Mark III after the War.

Old girl still has the original barrel, too!

The 18.5 TONS/"square is all post-War-Two BRITISH markings, so the rifle went to Britain during the Second War or ended up there, then was surplussed from England. Arm-and-Scimitar proofmark is London Proof House, as is joined GP and Crown.

18.5 Imperial Long Tons is 41,440 pounds per square inch: the standard working pressure of the .303 Mark VII Ball cartridge.

This rifle likely was made into a budget Sporter by Parker-Hale: that is one of their front-sight hoods on the critter.

And a very nice point: this one still can be restored to First World War specs with little trouble.

The Australian factory at Lithgow, New South Wales, turned out some VERY accurate rifles.

Looks like ya done good!

Nice toy!

As I understand it, the ENGLAND stamp indicates it was sold as surplus out of England. Doesn't mean anything else.

That's a nice looking old rifle. She's likely been a few places, but she won't tell!
