I looked at a sporter 1910 on the weekend. Barrel cut down, nice bore, nice crown, home made stock no sights(that I can remember). The owner wants $125 for it. Question is will it shoot worth a damm with the cut barrel & what can you do for sights/ scope mount?

There's a guy here in Vancouver who makes custom sporters (for his own entertainment) out of Ross rifles and I see him at the range on Thursdays when him and his friends hang out.

He even has one in 7mm Remington magnum.

He mounts scopes on his, but I don't know what he uses for bases. He's a retired Canadian forces armourer and gunsmith, so he makes anything he needs.

Oh yeah, I have a "Bubba" Ross M10 with a hacksawed-off barrel to 24 inches I think it is, and it was accurate enough with iron sights for me to kill my first deer with it.

Would probably be better if I had it crowned though!

Sportered Ross

I have just the same rifle with the original sights still on it and I can tell you, the guy who did the job knew his trade. The barrel has been cut and crowned, front sight moved back; crowning is as smooth as can be, the stock has been reduced to sporter size and properly smoothed.
With good factory loads, it can stay with the best Enfields. I especially like the nifty windage capability of the rear sight.
That Ross tends to prefer Winchester 180 grainers or handloads with Hornady's 174gr. FMJBTs.
Fired brass has a sharper, less rounded shoulder than the brass from my Enfields.

I wish somebody had a stock hobbing machine and decided to make small runs of Ross fancy sporter stocks for I would be in the lineup for one, that's for sure!

At one time I bought a semi finished sporter stock for a Mk. III Ross. IIRC, it was from Don Robinson. Was it Wilson who acquired Don's stock carving setup? Perhaps he still has the pattern.
