I was wondering if I could put one of those aftermarket sporterized stocks designed to fit the No.4 on my No.5. Would it fit without having to modify the metal at all. I don't mind haveing to adjust the stock a little if need be.

The reason I ask is that I have a No.5 in full military config. that I plan on using for hunting. I do not want to damage the original wood so I would like to get one of those synthetic sporterized stocks and preserve the original wood for later. I have heard that the No.4 and No.5 are very similar but I do not have a No. 4 that I can use to compare.

Thanks in advance.

They are close but there are some small differences.
The No 5 requires a round profile buttstock socket while the No 4 has a teardrop shape, that will be the case in most if not all rifles. You have to grind off the teardrop to fit the No 5. Other than that it is generally a close to drop in fit.
I have the exact same condition an dhad to do some shaving to make it fit the unaltered JC.
