Sporting clays etiquette- a rant

SC - known target flight path? Um, no.

I'm an experienced goose hunter and a hobbyist at the various clay sports. I shoot SC and FITASC every summer with friends in CT and NY. I hold my own out there, but geese are pretty easy after you've seen some of the UFO's you're dealt on a FITASC parcours.

As for the SC etiquette discussions... I've never shot a competition, but I can see how a lot of loud talking could be a source of irritation to some. Certainly, unsolicited coaching from strangers would get the daggers from me.

Re: picking up a strangers gun without asking... I'd also correct that immediately if I saw it (good job, spank). I'm like 99.9% of guys - you want to see my gun, just ask and you're welcome to shoot it too. Pick it up without asking and I'll tell you everything that is wrong with how you were raised. LOL

Hahaha!! I live and hunt in SK too and you have to shoot your clays in the wind too! Awesome excuse though for not being able to shoot worth a damned. Oh and I shoot lots of geese too but have yet to blame the wind when I miss?! Good goose hunters prefer wind as they know it helps to direct birds into the landing zone in the decoys! Nice try though!! f:P:

Do you blame other people talking while you are shooting?

How many times the target area of a clay target is a .Canada goose? 20 to 30 times perhaps? As for the known speed and flight path of clay targets, have you ever shot sporting clays? As for the 40km/hr nonsense, more like 46-48mph for skeet.

Who said 40km/hr?

It was him who claimed goose loads contained double the payload of trap shells.

Shot a few rounds, would rather spend my time in the field.

I guess they should use their goose loads containing 850 pellets instead of those trap shells. LOL

That's pretty funny tho lol.

Are they painting a pretty picture of sporting clays for you yet?
Likely not...

To be more right I will up the difficulty level Olympic trap, Tower, helice zz bird.

The cold truth is go out to a sporting clay field set up for the public and you will do quite well. Goose hunters secretaries of oil companies and Internet experts, If it was difficult at its basic level no one would come back!

With the courses that I have shot, a person can shoot at the level they choose, by choosing the shots that they want to shoot. And when I shot at Silver Willow, where there are two courses to choose from, people were lined up at every station on the green course, and we pretty much had the blue course to ourselves. It seems that most people preferred to shoot the easier course.

You walked right past me... and I have shot at silver willow since don used to be the trapper with hand machines. I also watched him breck 100 straight from the 27 yard line with his head completely off the stock because it was a borrowed gun and didn't fit...

I have been to many different courses and been to silver willow more then twice.

The game is changing and so are the shooters.

I talked with Don, and he told me how the game is evolving from the fast moving targets with limited shot opportunities to the slower moving targets with plenty of time to shoot. Many people want easier targets, but in most cases, the shooter that prefers more of a challenge can still find it if they want, due to situations like the blue course at Silver Willow, where there are four presentations to choose from. I prefer the faster moving targets, and the minis, so that is what I choose to shoot, rather than the slower moving targets that are lobbed up where you have plenty of time to shoot them. I find that Beaverhill Sporting Clays actually has more of the tougher targets, and is a tougher course overall. Even then, I choose to skip certain targets altogether, because they just don't offer much challenge.

Well in the late 80s it pretty much started as a way to mimick hunting type situations. So there was lots of targets like incoming duck ponds, pheasant realease site gimmick targets.

Then the idea came along hey we should right all our scores down. Not every person that sets a field is good at it but one way to make a target hard is with speed. A good setter will also use deception and that doesn't have to be with speed.

I could run a 5 stand shoot off a 50 foot zoom boom place all stands in range and throw international targets 80 mph. How many would you hit and would you come back?

As I posted, some ranges offer several presentations at each station, so that a person can choose the level of difficulty that he prefers. I for one like that option, I shoot the presentations that I like, and I don't bother with the ones that I don't like.

I think you have been to very few courses and have limited experience. Nor go to shoots where you have to shoot everything the challenge is to be perfect.

Some of you guys are pretty high strung, the club I shoot at is pretty relaxed and normal, its probably why I've gotten into clays and enjoy it. I'd probably have quit if I went near this twin place, ya'll sound like you need to give'em a tug and remember your dudes

I see a lot of people commenting who aren't winning competitions.

Not wanting to join this ramble, but I find it funny.

Shoot what you want. Be polite about your opinion. Have a nice day.

What distinguishes a top notch competitive shooter is his/her ability to concentrate when on station on breaking the target. To block out distractions and concentrate. They have not only mastered the mechanics of shooting but the psychological side as well. And the psychological side is the hardest to master. Ever wonder many Olympians and other top athletes consult psychologists to help improve there performances.
After reading the OP's original post and many other posts in this thread many folks need a lot of work on the psychological aspects of shooting, and perhaps one size larger underwear as the ones your wearing are to tight.
