Sporting Rife and Hunting Rifle - Shooting Federation of Canada

Shot a 588 today for LSBA December sporting rifle prone, personal best for me. Made some new mistakes due to difference in fit between the rifles, but was able to correct after first target.
Shooting hunting rifle next week.
Score is slowly creeping up over time! Hope to hit a 590 before new years.
Also hoping shooting with a scope again wont mess me up too badly, havent done that in a few weeks

Will try some kneeling this month as well

Awesome Job!!! I shoot for the LSBA tonight as well. I’m going to put your score on the board right away! Really well done Mac! You’ll be breaking that 590 soon no doubt!!! Really cool hearing about your way into the sport and your progress. Keep it up brother! Hope you’re enjoying it! Don’t worry about going back to the scope for hunting rifle, you’ll find you’ll get used to the switch back and forth for both disciplines. Let us know how the kneeling goes. Hope the videos above were able to help a bit. Cheers!!

Very nice, were any single position your best for that position? Or did you just line up some good ones together

I shot hunting rifle prone today, and have to say that spending a few weeks shooting sporting rifle made me enjoy shooting my cz457 even more, no struggle to see and lighter trigger. Shot a 595x30, personal best!

595 is a phenomenal score!!! Well done!!! Didn’t take long to blast through 590! I’m going to update your score on post 1.

For that 3p doing well on the prone helped. The standing was decent for me, that might have been my best standing. I should have taken more time on the kneeling…

So no real updates from me, my sporting rifle score is still around 585. I'm stubbornly trying to progress towards 595 average (master classification) before really moving on to other positions.
Haven't made a ton of progress over the holidays.
Last few days I picked up a SCATT basic so I can make some progress at home.
Funny story, I was really getting frustrated with this because for some reason I had way harder a time hitting the 10 ring compared to normal. So SCATT only has ISSF targets, I thought they were similar if the black part of the target was similar. Turns out ISSF 10 ring is 10.4mm, and sporting rifle 10 ring is 40mm and X ring is 20mm. Felt way better about myself after making that realization!

I'm trying to play with the target visual size and my apertures so that they are similar to my sporting rifle sight picture at the range. Hopefully it doesn't mess me up and actually helps me to get more practice.

That SCATT will be a huge benefit. Enjoy it. Things have been busy on my end and I haven’t shot much. I’ll be shooting Sunday though. Let me know how that scatt works out.

I grew up shooting SFC smallbore Sporting and Match rifle, the whole family including my mother shot. the last Nats. I shot were in 1970 in Manitoba .
The man demonstrating the positions in the pictures above , BTW is the late great A.R. (Bob )Todd - my father!:d

@iron cat that’s awesome to hear! I’m glad I found that CIL small bore manual. So cool to hear about the history of the sport and your family’s involvement! Check your pm’s in sending you something momentarily.

This is something I might be interested in. I originally wanted to take up target shooting with pistols but the new gun laws put a stop to that

Please have a look. I believe there is a member on that group from Alberta’s Provincial Sport organization. There’s also a link to an article that will give a clear picture what the sport is about. Targets are located under the files tab in the group. You can print them and try it. Be sure to select “actual size” in your print settings. You won’t get the entire target but you’ll get bullseyes (diagrams in sfc speak) to work with. Hope you enjoy it. Reach out if you have any questions.
