So far I am really impressed with these things. :)

While Globalstar's sat-phone service sucks big time (how's that for an understatement?? ;) ) these little tracking and simple messaging units work like a hot damn! Anyone who gets one should also "splurge" and activate them with the tracking option.

For a hunter who goes on solo treks these may well save your life or at least the searchers will know where to look for the body.

I was looking at one of those at the local honda dealership a few weeks ago.
Something I am seriously considering before I start hunting or start touring BC back roads on my KLR again.
The big thing that I was impressed with was the cost. this is something that is easly affordable and even the yearly subscription fees do not seem that bad either.

There's a young guy up here who spends lots of time out on the land and carries one, and the reports are quite good. I work with his dad who says that they can get on Google Earth and see exactly where he is. Should he run into trouble a helicopter or ground rescue could get to him with no messing around. Sounds like a great idea.

ok... saw the link to the site and got the info... This is an incredible value for what you get. $170 for theunit and about $150 for messaging, tracking and google maps... not to mention emergency service. Now a bad gift for the solo hunter.

'Boo have you been into any heavy stuff yet and can you comment on continuousity of reception? (I know your area is alot flatter than mine).
My only question/concern is how they work in the narrow valleys of the BC Central Coast where I play and work (including some of SRupp's hunting spots - but don't worry I won't give them away ;) ) Since we can't get GPS reception in a lot of those areas I am not sure how well these would work.
Colin was apparently going to be testing one and maybe he can put in his two bits at some point.
Cheers

I have tried them in the thick bush and they seemed to work OK. My assumption would be if you can't get a solid GPS fix in some areas the SPOT may not get out either but one would have to try it to find out for sure.
