Complete n00b when it comes to optics.

Looking for a recreational spotting scope to view my targets and confirm hits at the range (from 20 yards out to 200).

Looking for a low cost option (around $100 or less if possible).

For $100 your choices are to wait and watch for something quite old but decent quality to come up in the EE or more likely kijiji, or spend it on some shoes for walking out to the 200 yard target to see your hits.

A few years ago I bought a Bushnell Sentry from Costco for $100 that would cost more from most other places. It was o.k. for .22 and .30 cal holes at 100 yards, but not at 200. It takes a certain amount of money to make optics good enough and at $100 new retail, there isn't enough for the quality of materials and the production costs.

Sorry.

bought a nice Redfield complete with a bag and a tripod but it was $220

For under a hundred you could buy a Barska but you might as well go outside and throw the $100 in the garbage

Again, sorry but the on sale 100 dollar specials are a waste of money, unless you can find a smok'n deal a quality used scope. As with any optical equipment the price reflects the quality of the lens etc.

I just bought a "Redfield Rampage" about 260 bucks. It is a variable power from 20 to 60 so it lets you see bullet holes at 200 yds. Comes with a nice case and okay tripod.

I looked a quite a few, and this one met the criteria and optical quality without breaking the bank. If your sheep hunter and need to judge the quality of a ram two moutains over this probably would not be your scope.

aprilfoolsme was that price brand new for the redfield? or was that used? seems like a really reasonable price.

I also bought the Redfield. I paid $260. It is well worth it. Before that, I bought the Cambodian Tire $99 special on sale for $49. It worked but was strained to see a .22 hole at 100 yds

$100 or less.......something guaranteed to give you a massive headache & then it breaks.

(you can most likely up that to $300 and expect the same results)

I got away with just under $300 with shipping and tax for a Minox MD50 from CameralandNY. This isn't going to give me a headache and then break. But it is a compact and 16-30x50mm, and still needs a tripod. To keep good quality in this price range, you don't get really high magnification.

I forget what i paid for it but around the $300 dollar mark for one in WSS Winnipeg

I am starting to feel bad about how much stuff i have

I'm happy for you Tooner, I suspect you are the excpetion rather than the rule.

You mean that scope is the exception. I can't see any better than average. :)

I think Minox is still better than average quality for the price because although they are an old brand in some things, they are still relatively new in this segment of the optics market so they are establishing reputation before bumping up their prices. Vortex Optics also seems to be still at that stage.
