Hey Guys,

I am looking for my first spotting scope, I would like to in and around $500 with a tripod. I am looking for something that I can use when sighting in 223 rifles at 100 meters as well as target spotting for other shooters at longer ranges.
I have heard good things about the Minox brand and the 50 w has some nice features as well as compact size, but I am looking for other opinions and heads up on good deals.

Thanks guys.

I have a Minox 16-30x50mm and like the clarity and compactness. I think it's very good value for money, and will certainly work for what you said you want. I got mine from site sponsor CameraLandNY with a bit of discount as it was a demo, and always the service and price from them were very good. It is also available from Cabela's Canada at a reasonable price that should allow for a decent tripod within your budget.

I've not looked through anything Vortex, but lots of people say they are very good quality for their price. With equal quality of glass, an 80mm objective will give more scope for a better picture than a 50mm objective. it depends how much value you put on that versus the compactness of the Minox MD 50.

I just noticed in the EE, rainman is offering a used Minox Md62 (20-45x62) with a tripod for $500. If that were my budget, based on my experience of my Minox spotting scope and Minox binoculars, I'd probably buy that one.

Go with a Vortex Viper, even with the 60mm obj, it will easily handle your intentions of 100 yard 223 hole spotting and then some!

Go to WSS and look through several brands to get an idea of clarity so you know what you are paying for. The try to find one used on the EE

Take look at the Redfield Rampage. It is a 20x60x60, good optics, water proof etc, comes with a okay tripod and protective cover for the scope plus a nice heavy nylon carrying bag. I just bought one at Epps for $265.

If all your doing is looking at bullet holes out to a couple hundred yards this scope has all the features and magnification your going to need.

My budget was also $500, but after looking at many brands which ranged in price from $99 to $1950. I really liked the looks and quality of the Redfield as it suited my needs and expectations for half of what I was willing to spend.
