How much magnification should I be looking for in a spotter scope? Want to see target hits at 200 yds and glass for elk in a 5 point zone trophy so need clarity out to 400 to 500 yds to be sure he's legal.

I use a Night Force TS-82 I have both the 20 - 70 and a 30 -60 wide angle unit come with the first and did I ordered the second, Both are far more than you need in a hunting application at 1000 field of view small I have contacted Night Force directly to see if they are planning on a 15 x 45 would be the perfect power in a wide angle a show stopper. with the lenses I have you can see another out to 10 km plus! But you do need power to count points before you pull the trigger

Thanks for the recommendation. I wouldn't shoot at an animal far enough away to need a spotting scope to count the points but zi have spent several hours last fall stocking a bull elk only to find out he wasn't legal under the 5 point rule in the WMU I was hunting in Alberta. Looking at a Bushnell Trophy 15-45 x 60 scope on Amazon.

that amount of power is great I would look at a check things out at cabelas of where ever is close by and look thru them Vortex for the money has good glass, but when put besaide great glass all lesser glass shows! good luck and enjoy your new purchase Tight groups! Jim

Is a 12-35x50mm powerful enough to use at the range and general spotting? Been offered a Used Bushnell compact for for less than half of retail price on Amazon.

Probably enough range but optical quality might not be the best to actually see the holes not sure don't own one

I use a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 20x60-80mm. My usage is different than yours, but for competition I keep it at 20 power. When shooting at the range on paper I usually use the full 60x, 200m is easy, and 300 is good if there isn't a pile of mirage. The large objective lens is the key I think. At 20x I've used it to watch insects walking on 385m Turkey silhouettes. I've compared it side to side with a good Kowa scope for 40 cal holes at 300 yards on a day with significant mirage. The Kowa was perhaps just a tiny little bit clearer, but holes were tricky to verify with either scope.

I'm sure it would meet your needs.

Chris.

I picked up a Yukon 6-100×100. Really like the large objective and magnification. Only downside is it comes with a plastic tripod. This scope need a heavy and stable tripod.

I bought the Bushnell spotting scope, turns out it is 12-35x50mm, and for $60 Cdn figured I'd give it a try. Mounted it on one of my camera tripods and it seems pretty clear at max power. Will have to wait to see how it works at longer ranges as from my house The farthest chimney I can focus on is only 64 yds measured on my rangefinder. I can however, see the nails holding down the flashing so hopefull it will be OK at least at 100 yds.

I agree with other posters.

Optical quality is more important than magnification.

I have a Leupold 20x. Works as well as poorer quality 45x on side by side comparison. Cheaper glass is so grainy at the higher magnifications that it renders them of little to no value unless light conditions are perfect and if light conditions were perfect you can see what you need to see with binoculars.
