I'm down between deciding on the Pentax 65ED and the Vortex Viper HD. Anyone with recommendations between the two are welcome to chirp in.

But the next order of business will be setting them up next to me.

Any recommendations for spotting scope stands/tripods that do the job without breaking the bank and ship to Canada?

And discuss . . .

Here is a web site that compare different heads for spotting scope stands. I use a Freeland stand that was the standard when I bought it. Since then (the last 20 years) there has been a lot of new stands come out on the market. Ewings and Ray-Vin seem to be the most popular here in Ontario. Freeland also has a cool stabilizer rod for those windy days.

I have an Ewing, and I hate it! Constantly fighting with to get the head set up the way I want. The Ray-vin head is really slick- no tools required to get the scope positioned exactly where you want it.

Last I heard Ray-Vin was no longer producing their stands.

I have one and they are the cats ass.

Hopefully someone has/will take over the business and produce these fine stands once more.

Ray-Vin has sold out to Creedmoor Sports. You can order some of the Ray-Vin models directly from the Creedmoor website. From what I can tell though Creedmoor is not making the Ray-Vin F class bipod stand which is the nicest of the Ray-Vins.

The Creedmoor Polecats are pretty nice too. Sean, get hold of Gerry W. or Jim W. They both pickled up Polecats while in Phoenix and I'm sure either will let you check out them out.

Maybe the way to go now is to pick up a Freeland Universal bipod base, an extension rod and a Pole Cat head? You would have to order the base from Champion and the head from Creedmoor (the rod from either) but it still comes in under the price of a complete 5/8" polecat, and well under the the price of the 1". The Freeland base is adjustable for uneven ground where only the 1" polecat is.
