Hi everyone,

I hope I can pick your brains here. I'm planning a trip to the States and was wondering if Spotting Scopes also fall under this ITAR regulations? I'm trying to find info, but I guess I'm not looking in the right places.

If they do or do not fall under these regulations, can I get people's opinions on the Nikon 20-60x82mm Prostaff 5 Fieldscope. I'm planning on joining the long range/precision clinics as soon as I get my PAL/RPAL. I just figured I could get other items that I could use. I'm hoping (ok, more like praying) that I will be on the 1000m ranges, like ORA and Hungry's clinic that he's about to host.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

No, they don't, normally, as evidenced by the willingness of retailers who won't export riflescopes to export spotting scopes. If I were wanting to bring out something with a rangefinding reticle I would verify it personally. The key factors for optics seem to be that if it is a night vision device, sighting device for a weapon, or a rangefinder. Not all of such devices are banned from export, but some of them are and the ones allowed may require permits.

And if a U.S. retailer says they can't/won't export it that doesn't mean no one else can/will. Some businesses just say no because they don't want to bother learning the export rules for what they perceive as a small volume export market.

x2. that's how I do it.

Check out Optics Planet, they have a good selection and their site will let you know whether the optic is allowed to be shipped to Canada. SO far, any spotting scope that I have looked at is OK for export to Canada

Yup, no issue with spotting scopes. However we'd prefer you support a Canadian dealer rather then going to the States. Depending on where you are I can send you to someone that should be in the same price range as you'd get in the States.

PM me and I can help you out!
