What are YOU using for a spotting scope? Mine is a Bushnell cheapie that goes up to 32X and it is fine for .308 out to 200 but I lose .22 holes at that range. The other day our fine friends at P&D had a sale on a 60X unit but I think they wanted 700 beans for it. Would a 60X allow you to distinguish small bullet holes on the target at 300?

I went through the exercise a few years ago. Tried Leupold, Vortex, and other usual suspects. Settled on THE spotting scope which represents the very best value for money there is : Pentax 80 ED. Until you get to the stratospheric prices of scopes that begin with the letter K the Pentax 80 ED is the best you will find. Got mine from site sponsor Camera Land and, yes, I can see bullet holes ( with ease ) at 300 but then again my S+B Pmii shows them up as well :) No, seriously, get the Pentax - you will never regret it.

Edit : it is ALL about the glass quality. 60x out of a lesser scope means the image is simply a BIG blur whereas a quality piece will show the image in sharp detail.

Just started using a Kowa 663 with 25X LER eyepiece. From PeleeWings. Great scope! This one replaced my little old Kowa 20X compact.

Vortex Razor 85mm 25-60x

For picking out those itty bitty .223 holes ;)

+1 on the vortex razr

and the bulletproof warranty that comes with it :)

make sure you inspect your scope before you buy, i had wholesale north edmonton trying to sell me a demo full of fingerprints and minors scratches saying it was a new one. . . .i ordered somewhere else

note, if you own a dslr camera, they have a very cool digiscoping adaptor. i've had a lot of good shots once i learned ho to use it. money well spent if you already own both, the camera and the scope.
