Hello all,

I’m at a bit of a loss. Currently, I am consolidating all my rifles to AR15 .223/5.56 for cost/accessories/training reasons.

Right now, this is my current thought process and I want your input on it.

DD Mk18 with RDS + magnifier did carbine classes
PWS 14.5” with 1-8x FFP scope as a do-all fighting rifle and for precise fire out to 200 yards

That’s what I currently have in mind. And I’d like everyone’s input on that.

My next dilemma is as follows.

I want an SPR style rifle for precision rifle courses and service rifle courses. Think out to 500/600 yards. I would only be shooting 75/77gr pills through it with a 3-18x FFP scope.

I just don’t know if I should custom build a rifle for my purposes, or buy a complete rifle.

Option 1:
Custom built 18” SPR with a rifle-length .223 wylde 1/8 twist barrel; or should I go with a 20” barrel? 1/7 twist?

Option 2:
DD Mk12 with a 1/7 twist

Any input from you guys would be appreciated!

If you don’t mind importing a barrel, there are some very highly respected shops in the US that will offer a number of options for you. You can also go Canadian, but I’m not sure who the big dogs are for SPR barrels here.

You lose some velocity with 18” over 20” but accuracy shouldn’t be affected. I have no idea of the cost of a DD MK 12, but rolling your own will most likely be cheaper unless you really dig the clone look. Or, go JP and call it a day.
 
If I don't care about restricted or not I'd buy a BCM Mk12 rifle, either a mod 0 or mod 1 depending on preference. Great reliabile rifles that are solidly accurate.
If non-restricted priority id build one off of a SLR or ATRS receiver set with a 18.6" barrel.
 
There is practically no difference between 18 and 20.

SPR means a certain spec, if you are referring to the MK12. You probably will have get a "more" correct SPR profiled barrel like this one here. Basically it is a medium contoured barrel:

It is much cheaper to build a restricted than a non-restricted, and you can put in the proven Giessele SSA trigger without thinking about whether it will work or not.

I have bought the SSA :)

Just can’t decide on the Mk12 barrel with a 5.56 chamber and a 1/7 twist or a .223 Wylde chamber 1/8 twist 5R barrel?

As mentioned the dd or bcm mk12 is excellent. Cc also has the 18.6 mrr.

Triggers. As mentioned geissele ssa.

Optic... the 1-8 would be perfect for the role you described. And an acog or a comparable fixed 3 or 4x optic would be perfect for the 14.5

Sounds good!

I think I might go with the DD MK12 with a quality 1-8x and use my primary arms rds with BDC + 3x magnifier on my 14.5”
