How do you check the condition of the choke of a 12 g ? Can you do it with the spread pattern at a certain distance vs. shot weight?

Different shell loads will pattern different. I'm assuming you are looking to find out what type of choke you have. Go to a gunshop, and pick up a choke measuring tool. They take all the guess work out, and are handy to have if your into older shotguns. Goodluck.

Actually I am trying to figure out how to check if the choke is funtioning properly. How can you tell if it is shot out?

I've never heard of a choke being shot out. I blew off a poly choke once, but that's a different story! :D

Take your gun to the range, put a big sheet of paper out at 30 or 40 yards, aim for the center and fire. Draw a 30" circle around the densest part of the pattern and count the pellets. Try this with different loads and determine what patterns best. As for being shot out, I don't think you'll have to worry about that.

The gun is labeled as a full choke but has had some slugs fired through it. I am told this is a no-no as it ruins the choke.

Rifled style foster slugs are fine. That's why they have grooves cut into them. They impart very little spin in the bullet, rather, they squish as they pass through the choke. Fosters are fine to fire through a full choke. In fact, many shotguns group them better with a full choke. As I said above, just don't shoot saboted slugs out of it.

That is an interesting piece of info. I am sure that any slugs that went through were rifled. What exactly is a saboted plug? By the way thanks for your help pharaoh2.
