As to the recent efficiency threads, I started a spreadsheet for some efficiencies.

Ill pass it around if anyone wants to expand or add things, what was easiest was to just populate from relevant ammo off of Hornady's website, uploaded a picture below but... The purpose is to compare specifically:

Energy vs. powder at muzzle
Energy at muzzle vs. energy at 500 yards (% retained)
Taylor KO factor at 100 and 500 yards

This info and calibers involved are to reflect mid/long range hunting efficiency in contrast from lighter modern calibers to heavier hitters to get a sense of what might be too little.

The file is young (small and limited), and will be expanded slowly. Feel free to PM if you want the file, or to post your own data.

So a couple things stand out as leaders.

For the most muzzle energy per powder (of the limited group) the 308win, 300wsm and all the 6.5's did very well, but stood out only marginally. The weatherby and nosler not so well for getting the energy out of the powder and into velocity, the 7mm-08 seemed to half a foot in both but could be me powder estimates were off more there....


For retaining energy, the 338 lapua and 6.5 PRC were leaders, but the WSM's and 6.5 calibers are close at their heels. The 95 grain .243 and lighter 6.5CM did poorly though.

I havent put too much thought into the Taylor KO scores, but it gives a good comparison for the 500 yard mark. most of the ammo is ELD-X or SST, both seem to hold energy well and be more typical of what would be wanted for mid range hunting profiles/ballistics, lets go on the assumption that the comparison is for mid sized ungulates, and the chart isn't for large predator hunts, but more of a sheep/deer/caribou or maybe moose or elk not as far out.

The 30-06 scores around 13-15 at 100 yards, the 6.5CM about 10, so lets say about 8 or so is reasonable for mid sized ungulates for the comparison. The .243, 6CR and .257 roberts are at the extent of their reach, projectiles lighter than 130 don't do well for lethal energy here either. Obviously the lapua and 200 grain 300-338 calibers are still quite capable at this range for energy.
