MCTV news just announced that Liberal MPP David Orazietti of Sault St. Marie will be holding a news conference to announce the renewal of the spring bear hunt. Didn't catch when the news conference would be. It sounds like they will be reintroducing it in some areas but not others.

There has been a lot of political chatter about a change to the hunt but all of the gutless b-------- have steered clear of using the term "Spring Bear Hunt" my MPP (I did not vote for him, Lieberal) is wanting to review the bear seasons but stops short of a spring bear season. I pray this is true, it will make spring time fun again in the woods. (no turkey where I am)

Holy Crap! I hunted spring bears for more than 30 years (switched to turkeys when they cancelled it)... My son really wants to get a bear, and we have done a couple spot n' stalk hunts, but the fall is so busy... I told him that I did not think that we would ever see the spring bear hunt back again.. Harris and Snobolen are lying, rat-faced finks... And robbed Ontario of 100's of millions in revenues and Ontario sportsmen of many fond memories with friends and family.

It wasn't all Harris's fault, although he had no choice other to stop the hunt or the money stopped from that granola muncher who owned Husky Tool an Die in Bolton Ont. Stood in front of tv camerars with a sh^t eating grin an as much as told Harris to cancel or else.

newb question here - but why would anyone care really? i.e what's the difference between spring and fall bear hunt? I hunted bear this fall, seemed fine to me if I wanted to get a bear. Do we like skinny, hungry bears better or something? Are the bears better? The hunting better? Something else?

Less nuisance bears, and of course the obvious: More hunting opportunity.

Well, the main thing for me is that a spring hunt keeps the population down a bit. Which is nice because I'll actually be able to walk the streets of my town after dark again without worrying nearly as much about getting mauled or killed.

It WAS Harris' fault... He was the premier at the time and the inquest that followed showed that Snobolen met with Harris before making the announcment... And Robert Schad did not threaten to "pull their money," he thretened to spend a million dollars in ten key ridings, campaigning AGAINST the Harris government if the spring hunt wasn't cancelled... This was on the heels of a province wide series of community meetings that were overwhelmingly in favor of the spring hunt and in the face of Snobolen's own biologists who stated clearly that the hunt was a healthy renewable pursuit... Ontario went from 100's of millions in revenue to tens of millions in bear management.

Better to make a rug out of.

Yes we like spring bears better. There are many reasons not the least of which is the reverse of the very thing that Snobolen quoted as the reason for the closure (Snobolen = dumb ass!)... They said that the spring hunt was being cancelled because; "even one orphaned cub was too many." When the truth is that young of the year cubs are never far from the sow, remember they have only been out of the den for a month or two and have never seen the world before this. Sows with cubs present are protected, in the spring this is obvious, because the cubs stick tight to momma... In the fall however they are more independant and will often roam away for short periods of time, during those periods a mistake can be made and a sow shot... As a note the cubs will reden with the sow for their first full winter... She will drive them off the following spring when she gets ready to breed again in late May or June. Another reason for a spring hunt is the boon to Northern communities when tourism revenues are low and there are few "eco" options. For bear baiters (not looking for a debate), the spring is a more effective time for this tactic.

The reason I prefer the spring hunt is that there is not much else going on... It doesn't compete with upland, waterfowl, deer, moose etc... Now we hunt turkeys but are always done within three days of the Apri 25th opener and spring bears really get going from the middle to end of May... PERFECT!
