So I've never hunted bear, and want to get my feet wet with an Alberta black bear this spring. I've hunted deer for years, but know absolutely nothing about bear hunting. What's the best way to start, things I need to read, techniques I need to learn? I'm totally ignorant to the ways of 'bait'... am I better off just going with a guided hunt for my first time, and learning as much as I can along the way? Thanks for the help!

Depending on where you want to hunt, baiting may or may not be allowed.

"Spot and stalk" hunting for Spring bear works well IMHO, and is a great way to check out new hunting spots for the Fall. There are lots of places in the province where there bears are plentiful.

Where are you planning on hunting?

Up north and out west there are several bears and it can be done easily with spot and stalk if you dont have the time or the knowledge on areas to bait, etc and the time to get out and do it right.

Lots of good spots...you want to find the time of year when the grass is just starting to green up on the sides of the roads and cutlines, but not green in the trees yet. You'll find bears on cutlines and roads easily if you're in the right general areas...mainly in the afternoons and evenings is what I've found...

Alberta has plenty of bears, and you'll do good if you get into the right spots at the right time. I'd be glad to give you a few more pointers on areas via PM....

Good advice, this is one of 4 bears we seen in two hours, driving on the roads in the Brazeau area outside of Edson late last spring. This is the only guy who stayed around long enough to get pics, the other ones were camera shy :D

Don't you westerners just drive fire roads in logged out areas and shoot them from your truck? :p ;)

Not sure of the regs in your area, but here in Ontario spot & stalk is pretty much out of the question, the bush is too thick. We have to bait, or attempt to bring them in with a varmint call.

From the pickup's box, actually, using the pintle mounted Ma Deuce (when we're not chasing them trhough the woods with sharp sticks, that is). - dan :D

Heck many of us are too busy working and making so much $ that we got no time.

Well no, not in my case anyways.
Truth is I just need more hunting buddies.:( :( :(

We were actually working when the pic was taken, not hunting, but we did manage to get a collar on the bear and chained him to a tree so we could go back later when the season opened.
As long as you leave a note on the collar saying it's your bear the other hunters will leave it alone!!:shotgun:
