Spring bear hunt... what will you be baiting them with?

Get a gallon paint can and fill it with bananas. Put the lid on it and leave it in the sun for a few days. Wire it in a tree about 12 ft high and punch a hole in the bottom with your knife.

Great bait, no weight.

The thread about "which gun will you take" made me think about "what will I use for bait" this year...

So let's hear it, if baiting is legal in your area, what will you be using to draw them in?

I'm going to try a barrel with a big bag of dog food in it and covered with molases... and maibe something else I find along the way (I'll probably add cheapo toothpast, that seems to have worked well in the past)

What works for you?

Lead is all I need..............

Scent of Ten Dead Horses - only thing is I can't bait in the zone where I'm hunting. My charm and good looks will have to do. ;)

I was told that fish and meats are not so effective.

What I use is donuts and used fryer grease, the grease is also poured all over the ground and this year I will be strapping a metal tube to a tree filled with grease. The idea is that the bear gets greas all over his paws and tracks it through the woods, leaving a nice trail.

I found here on PEI (where there are no bears) I just slip in behind any old restaurant and almost every one has 2 45G drums of oil waiting for recycling.

I hgave as well used only grease but having something for the bear to actually eat really helps.

Last year my bait was set out on a Saturday and my friend called me on Wednesday to say they spotted a bear, she was dead the following Saturday.

in the west we have to use a smelly hunting partner. its unfair. dougnuts and grease would be easier as it wouldn't try running away.

Hang a stinkbag, onion sack/leaky bucket etc. full of fish/rotten meat....whatever,so long as it smells strong.Hang it from a rope high enough that the bears can't get at it.Doesn't matter, they aren't gonna eat it anyway, this is just to get their attention from a long distance and draw them to the real bait, which is a 45 gallon plastic/steel drum full of popcorn and fryer grease.Chain the barrel solid to a tree, and cut a 6" diameter feeder hole near the bottom so they have to work for it,shake the barrel etc.,and it'll last longer.Hit up your local movie theater for a steady supply of FREE popcorn which they discard nightly. You know, that same stuff that they charge you $6/ounce for at 9pm.........it's FREE after 11,LOL. It's alot lighter than day old Tim's donuts and bears love it.Plus, once you get hit, they get the grease all over their paws and leave a scent trail back to the bait for even more bears to follow.

told the wife i was going to use her as bear bait at certain times of the month, apparently they're attracted to them(brave bear!!) during "that time"
she didn't think it was funny...pretty tempting at times, though!!lol

Dumbdawgs underwear. They will smell it for 100 miles! True story! I slept in the truck for 2 weeks this year. Couldn't take the stench!

Dave.

after you make a bait set, and burn some bacon or honey to get their attention, how long till they should be comming regualry? a day? a week?

i was gonna build a set this weekend, and pay the 35$ for a tag once im reasonably sure i'm bringing them in

Last year, for me, the bears stated coming in 2 days, but I live in PEI, so it was 6 days before i got him. I am going out tomorrow to set out some bait and build a stand. I plan to bring a rifle!
