Spring bear hunt... what will you be baiting them with?

My sites have not been hit yet!!! it's been 2 weeks so far. But I have also been told at one of the registration stations, that they have only done 1 bear this year! so it seems as though the long winter and cold spring IS a factor.

same here, nothing at all except a raccoon got into it though. im moving my site from albert to kings county, its more of a drive, but hopefully ill have better luck.

I use bread from the local bread basket $3.00 per hundred loaves. Then add all kinds of stinky stuff or left overs. I even have a beaver carcass hanging left over from trapping.

Hello, I was up in northern Alberta for 4 days. Lots of snow in the trees still, lots of deer and moose around, but no sign of recent bear activity. Things are starting to green up in the ditches and wet areas. Anybody else been seeing any out and about? Eric

I saw 3 black bears walking the CN tracks just east of Golden/Kicking Horse pass a week ago or so. I think they were trying to catch a ride to Whistler.

been hearing alot of these honey burns and was wondering if i only simmer honey in the pot or do you boil it slowly with water. what exactly goes into the burn pot?

I tried a Maple burn once and man it was messy. It boiled over the pot (large coffee can) and all over the stove. I would get a stove that you don't mind getting messy and possibly design an overflow so it can run on the ground away from the pot.

Or try to find some way of keeping it down, I know a few drops of cooking oil works with water, maybe it will do the same with honey.

Sadly Nothing, Not sure where to hunt bear around these parts ..... No where like Nova scotia at all, all these no rifle this, get permission that ..... Sure do miss the old farm I used to hunt on in Nova Scotia
:(

Won't be doing the spring hunt, but got posted back to nova scotia so i'll be at the fall hunt!

:) :D :dancingbanana: :shotgun: :sniper:

When one baits for bear it is not hunting; it is assassination/execution. The two forms should not be confused. :D

Bull ####!

Maybe in areas where you can see bears often. But in NB where I hunt and where I got my bear last season you just don't see them. the farmer/landowner/deer hunter, who's property I was hunting on said hed has hunte dthe area all his life (50 plus years) and has seen plenty of sign but has only ever seen 1 bear while hunting
We baited last year and got a bear coming within 2 days and got the bear a week after. This year we are baiting about 400 yds from the old site and have been waiting 3 weeks, nothing!

So you know what you can do with your opinion????

X2! im a seasonal resident near where bill c68 hunts, and you just dont see them in the woods, its rare to get a glimpse unless your using bait. those things can disapear like a fart in the wind when they want to

arancio - if you are here to bad mouth others or their methods, pls just save me the time and go away.

I have little doubt there's all kinds of things others would think you're doing wrong. Keep the bad attitude to yourself.

I have bad mouthed no one. I believe in free chase; others do not. There is no need for anyone to be defensive.

Let me be clear. Your statement suggesting that it's a lack of 'skill' that's the problem with galen is indeed considered 'bad mouthing' around here and will not be tolerated.

You are free to approve or disapprove of various techniques as you like in your own life or to comment on what methods you PREFER here. But disparaging others and suggesting that they are not skilled hunters because they use different methods is NOT allowed.

For the record - baiting is forbidden in my province and historically we frown on it as well. But you don't see me suggesting those who practice it are somehow hunters of 'inferior skill'.

Everyone's different, everyone has their own beliefs and methods, and every place has it's own geography that dictates how things are done. Please - by all means share the methods and experiences YOU prefer on our board (we love to hear it) but don't be calling anyone else down for what they do.

If it was not your intent to do so - i'd recommend being a tad more careful how you phrase things in the future because there is no doubt that's how it came across.

Of course, it does take a certain level of skill to HUNT bear.

ouch! *rubbing the burn*

i dunno, depends what province you hunt, and ill admit right off the top im deffidently no expert, quiet the opposite, im in my twenties and have little experience, but if you think theres all kinds if bear just itching to get shot here in anagance/sussex new brunswick, ill open the door to my cabin to you anytime, i would love to see someone crawling around the pucker brush stalking a fart in the wind :D

Just an FYI, there is a place in NB, that I hunted once, paid a guide to take me, that you can "spot and stalk" bears. They have little fear of people, although you are not going to get too close. Anyway, we saw 11 bears in about an hour and a half (about half were cubs) all were seen from the vehicle. But this place is difficult to get into as it is often closed to the public. So baiting it is.

Oh yes and Thanks Foxer:

Arancio, please tell me how you guys hunt bears... myself I can only get a couple of weekends per year to go and since I am paying $145 for a non resident license and at least $100 per trip, I have to do everything in my power to get my yogi.

I would like to try varmint calls some time.

When we were homesteading in the bush north east of North Bay, bears were a nuisance. I loaded shot shells with pepper corns to move them on from around the cabin. They were often taken by locals while hunting moose or deer. Over by Monetville, my cousin’s husband and neighbors killed 16 one year protecting their oats crops and a local apiary. Bears love oats. It is like catnip to cats; they roll in it and slobber on it. A bear can put down a lot of oats in an evening. Do they grow oats in NB?? Are there apiaries there??

Those years I have gone to the trouble and expense of acquiring a bear license, I mostly see where they have been. Those I have seen while hunting them did not offer the shot I would like or only a fleeting glimpse. When I don’t have a bear license I see them regularly. I have seen some beauties, some face to face, with only my ML shotgun in hand. I guess the secret is to hunt bear without a license.

It is not the destination, it is the journey

I did not mean to upset you all. Please accept my apology. Look to see me no more.

you didnt upset no one arancio, i can handle a little ribbing from time to time, no hard feelings.

oat crops? in may? we just got rid of he snow two weeks ago!!

the only thing similar to your hunt i can think of hear in NB is near Elgin. there are commercial blueberry fields and in the fall they are literally polluted with bear, but most hunters i have witnessed just drive around until they see one and step off the road to shoot, not very sportsman like.

but thats only done in the fall, when the berries are in season. there is a professional guide within a km or two of the fields who will let you stalk fall bear, however in the spring, he baits for his clients too.

Oats ripen late in that part of the country: September - October. No one ever shot a bear in the spring that I heard of. The farms are homesteads a good distance from any town. Where I was, people wanting to pick blueberries would take a rifle or a rifle man to watch over them. Young bear is good to eat, but they don't dress out very big. A German neighbor liked to pickle and then smoke the older like ham.

Have a great day.
